Les Powles only had 8 hours of sailing experience when he decided to sail solo around the world. Three complete solo circumnavigations followed, all of them full of incident. The last one saw him given up for dead when he hadn't been heard from for four months. His boat had been damaged in a storm, he'd lost all communications and had virtually run out of food. When he sailed up the Lymington River (aged 70) in a skeletal state his arrival caused a media frenzy. Lymington Yacht Haven subsequently gave him a free berth for life.

Remarkable RNSA
About the Author
Les Powles, now 85 and living aboard his beloved self-built yacht Solitaire in Lymington Yacht Haven, is an ordinary yachtsman with an extraordinary tale to tell. He won Yachtsman of the Year in 1981 in recognition of his amazing achievements, and after completing his last great adventure, Lymington Yacht Haven gave him a free berth for life.

strangely compelling

You can see from the other reviews, what the basic story is. 50 yr old builds boat and circumnavigates three times. This is amazing in and of itself. Reading the book though you are left with several other thoughts...what would drive someone to set out so underprepared on such a potentially dangerous journey, three times! While he tends to tell many parts of his voyage in week chunks, i.e. week 32 we made 460 knots and ate virtually nothing again, etc, reading between the lines this man is slowly starving to death, yet refuses to make landfall or fish for food! Why? I read the book cover to cover, but was mostly aghast at what he put himself through.
On his first voyage he is saddened by all the amazing Islands he is sailing past, but doesn't stop to see them.
It remains unclear to me why he wanted to circumnavigate non-stop on his second voyage. He was so poorly provisioned he ate next to nothing for weeks and weeks and arrived with virtually no food left at all, a skeleton.
On his third voyage, he again starves as he sails nonstop from New Zealand to England.
I can't say I understand what motivates Les, but he is one tough cookie.

Great value book

I had never heard of Les Powles (to my regret) before I read this book. I only bought it based on the reviewers who had given of their time to let the rest of us in on the secret. This is an extraordinary story and very entertaining. Be advised reading it will cause you to be late for many appointments. (Can’t put it down and all that) Les’s honesty is rare and highly commendable. Of course this is only one of his attributes his motivation and determination are admirable. Having read many of the great authors and circumnavigators I would rate this book up there among the best of them. Congratulations to Lymington Marina for their acknowledgements of Les’s achievements.

Inspiring

Although the author attributes his superior accomplishments to his nationality, in fact his life is testimony to universal value and an indomitable determination to live free, ready to embody his dream of sailing, and assume responsibility for all of his decisions. That he can narrate his personal voyage through life with humility and humor is simply admirable. An excellent reading for sailors and couch navigators.
