Nice read!
By Philip J. Nork
Crumple Zone is an interesting read. I don't normally read these suspense books, too much thinking goes into them. I tend to like the more easy flowing whimsical approach of a romantic novel or a memoir written in narrative non-fiction written with many liberties taken to make the story more enjoyable.
In the beginning we meet the main character, Lara, who is a 32-year-old workaholic who values her job way too much. When she gets fired--technically laid off--she does what most would, she drinks until drunk. Unfortunately she also ends up in bed with a long-time colleague, who is in love with her, Daniel. After unceremoniously throwing him out of her life, Lara plans on a trip to Chile.
Lara plans everything out too much and is not open to spontaneous anything. After the `firing' her best friend, Bridget, talks her into taking the trip against Lara's not wanting to.
The first part of the book reads pretty slowly and even after Lara arrives overseas and meets a handsome, mysterious man named Rick the plot replays itself over and over. The scenery of Chile is described over and over, and the same end result happens between Rick and Lara. There is an internal debate going on in Lara's head, but she never can make up her mind as to what to do.
While we are reading about Lara and her adventures the book also introduces us to Enrique and his wife, Maria. Enrique is a trucker, spending too much time on the road, while talking to his wife, even though she isn't there.
It isn't until Lara meets Enrique that the book picks up and becomes interesting. Not being a spoiler, I will let you the reader find out what happens next.
This much I will tell you. This book is about love, trust, finding oneself and getting over past disappointments.
I found it enjoyable and recommend it to anyone looking for a quick 55,000 word book to help spend the night with.

Atmospheric, Disturbing. Clever.
By Calamity
Crumple Zone has many layers.
When Lara's normal life crumples, in love and work, she takes a trip to Chile and the dry, lonely Atacama Desert. Here the vast, barren landscape is the perfect setting to illustrate her desolate life. At the same time we meet the troubled trucker, Enrique, in an emotional crumple zone of his own. When their paths collide, another type of crumple zone, Lara and Enrique's physical and emotional journeys are woven together.
From opposite cultures, both Lara and Enrique are recluses yearning to belong. They are travellers seeking solace and protection, facing the same conflicts: commitment and the inability to commit; reality and illusion, love and loss. Dreams and illusions begin to crumple until finally, with Enrique's physical collapse, Reality itself crashes down with such force the reader is unprepared for the crushing impact.
This is a clever novel and quite scary at times on physical and psychological levels. Edith Parzefall writes with authority, creating characters we care about, others we loathe, and takes us to a place many of us will never see. She shows us how, in the most unlikely situations, our very presence can make a real difference in a stranger's life and theirs in ours, for better or worse.
Crumple Zone is atmospheric, visual, disturbing and a very satisfying read.

You Want to Wind Up in This Crumple Zone!
By Karen M. Rice
I just finished reading Crumple Zone. Parzefall is an adept writer, and she draws us through the gamut of human emotion without pausing to let us breathe. Her young, modern heroine is very human, yearning to be a strong, independent woman, yet drawn by the very human urge to mate and the longing to love and be loved. The book sometimes made me laugh, occasionally made me angry, often made me smile, and in the end almost brought me to tears. What more can one ask of a book?
