About the Author
Linda Simon is Professor of English at Skidmore College. She has taught adult learners in Harvard University’s Extension School. Her latest book is The Critical Reception of Henry James: Creating a Master; she also has written biographies of Alice B. Toklas, Thornton Wilder, and William James.

Very Articulate

Normally, I don't write reviews. A previous reviewer received a terrible copy of this book, most likely from a reseller. After balking on the purchase of this book, I finally broke down and, despite the negative review, purchased a new copy through Amazon. I'm glad I did!
As an adult learner going back to school (full-time), my anxieties are extremely high. New Beginnings offers a variety of ways to explain present day academia, college culture, classroom etiquette and suggestions to make the most of your study time. The chapters listed are:
1) Becoming a Student
2) Assessing Learning Needs and Course Requirements
3) Identifying College Resources
4) Strategies for Managing Time & Stress
5) Developing Note-Taking, Studying & Test-Taking Skills
6) Strategies for Reading
7) Strategies for Research
8) Strategies for Writing
9) Grammar Brush up
10) Math Brush-up, and
11) Financing your Education
In the past, I have taken on-line courses through an accredited university. All of my course's syllabi depicted course requirements (i.e. research paper) and outlined the professor's expectations. This text provides explanations of formulating a research question; primary & secondary sources; ways to find verifiable documentation; writing styles, etc.
The book is extremely comprehensive and well worth buying. I give five stars to the author with my appreciation!
Update 2014: This book certainly helped me. I graduated with a 3.66 GPA, soon to attend graduate school. The suggestions relating to organization are invaluable! I intend to keep using the same suggestions on this next journey.
