copiously illustrated handbook for state-of-the-art publishing techniques

The nine chapter titles of the Content indicate the scope of the material as well as the shift in the regard of these with many contemporary popular and trade publications: Editorial Concept, Idea; Object; Structure; Navigation; Typography; Layout, Grid; Cover; Visual Language; The Next Chapter. Other terms such as Navigation and Visual Language are ones from computer use, especially website considerations and design, which are influencing periodicals newspapers, and books. "From the positioning of pull quotes to the different styles of page numbering, from the artful use of psychological techniques to lead the reader's eye into the story, to the ever-improving art of typography..." from Andrew Losowsky's "Introduction" specifies some of the details being affected by the ideas, concepts, and techniques in the chapters.

For example, Pulp is a new type of travel guide which features a crime novel with actual locations followed by promotions of these. This idea thus brings together the popular literature field of crime fiction with information for tourists adding an extra dimension to each of the elements. A multi-language fashion magazine, publications showcasing new artistic talent, and self-published works are among other types to be found in this chapter.

Although "Turning Pages" is about ninety percent visual, its text should not be overlooked. More than simply captions for the visual material, related text notes what to look for in the visual material and often explains its purpose and source. Apart from annotation-like text, there are also interspersed editorial commentary and quotes by designers, typographers, and other professionals whose work is displayed. In short, the text is instructive.

The relevance and even value of this book for getting abreast of the state-of-the-art work being done in the publishing field mostly in Europe and to a lesser-extent the United States cannot be overstated. Professionals and talented students and newcomers in the field would be missing something by not going through this work with keen attention.

Amazing resource

As a graphic designer, I'm constantly complaining about the lack of new and interesting design in print media. So I was thrilled to find this book from my favorite publisher. It shows excellent examples of a thriving, edgy editorial design in print publications, like Apartamento, Domus, a few German publications. Maybe one of the most interesting parts is the documentation of online media redefined via interactive graphics and data visualization a la The New York Times and others. I'll complain no more. An excellent resource for those who feel stifled by traditional stagnant print media.

Grid-tastic stimulus!

Any person in the arts knows that you can never have enough artistic stimuli to captivate your imagination and create a top notch design. As a graphic designer I am extremely impressed with the layout and use of typography. At first it can seem a bit over stimulating, but it is beautifully done nonetheless, and the content is perfect for any new or experienced designer. A welcome addition to my shelves of design books, this is one I will always use as a reference. This book is a must for any designer. Welcome to the grid!

Alex Grayson is originally from the south but has recently moved to Northern Ohio. Although she misses the warmth of Florida and often times detest the cold of Ohio she absolutely loves living in the north. Her and her husband bought a house on two acres of land and live there with their daughter, one dogs, two cats, and 10 ducks, and 5 chickens. She hopes to eventually get a couple of goats to add to their country way of living. Besides her family and home her next best passion is reading. She is often found with her nose obsessively stuck in a book, much to the frustration of her husband and daughter. On more than one occasion Alex found herself wanting a book to go a certain way, but it didn’t. With these thoughts in mind she decided to start writing stories according to her own visions. Although this is a new endeavor for her she hopes that readers find her concepts on romance intriguing and captivating. Alex welcomes and encourages feedback, of any kind. Well written, but too much doesn't add up

Okay, this story kept me intrested and I loved the characters of both Mia and Mac. There was just too much that did't make sense...spoilers...the book stated over and over that Mac and Mia broke up ten years ago. So how can Trent be eleven? Mac and Mia broke up...a couple months later Tessa announces she's pregnant and Mac marries her, yet none of Mia's family can figure out why they broke up? And when a person is raped, whether the person is male or female, THEY DON'T MARRY THE RAPIST! Then stay married for six years, never have sex with the rapist, but never cheat on the marriage? And then the DNA information is completely absurd! And I'm confused...was it Jesse or Ethan that caught Mia and Mac at Mia's mom's house? Cause it kept changing...okay, I'm realizing now thar 3 stars is probably too many...

Unrealistic

I loved the first book and for the most part I really like this book. What I can't get over is the conflict between Mac and Mia... I just can't see not telling Mia what really happened for TEN YEARS! If Mac was truly in love with Mia he would have told her, made her listen. Then the ending was SO unrealistic.... I mean really?!? That was....... dumb. Sorry. I know the author put a lot of time and effort into this novel so I'm giving it 3 stars but I didn't like it nearly as well as I did the first.

Decent read but annoying storyline

I thought the book was overall decent but the story line really annoyed me. The fact that everyone is mad at Mac just blew me away. He was basically raped so I don't understand the anger at him. I can understand Mia being hurt initially but why wouldn't Mac just go to her and explain? He had testing to back up his claim he was drugged. Even more unbelievable is that Mia's brother is mad at Mac too and he finds out 10 years later and knows the whole story. Mac was drugged and sexually assaulted! How was that his fault.

Good advice to rise above the noise

Matt has created a comprehensive, plain English, fast-reading, no-nonsense primer on the online advertising industry and the challenges it faces. Rather than stop there, he offers well thought out solutions that point to a brighter future where ads don't suck. Cookies and algorithms are no substitute for good old-fashioned transparency and relationship building. This book should be on the shelf of any brand manager or CMO who is responsible for generating qualified leads.

We all ought to be aware of this war... Great insights

I've worked in the digital advertising industry for more than a dozen years, and Matt Hrushka has done an excellent job framing what is one of the biggest challenges our industry faces. This is a smart and fun illustration of the reality of advertising technology and how it is impacting all of us, from the advertisers to the end consumers. Well worth the price for an informed opinion and an entertaining read.

Some interesting information, packaged like a college term paper

Is there a person on the planet that likes ads, other than ad companies and businesses? (Other than people who watch the Superbowl that is.) Ads are that "necessary evil" - without them, we'd be paying for everything. With them, well, an hour long TV show becomes 40 minutes, our skylines are rimmed with billboards, and let's not even get started about the biggest collection of ads, the Internet.

Whatever I thought this book was, it wasn't what I got. No offense to the author, but this reads like my English semester paper that I prettied up a cover I made in Word, double-spaced and set to 14 point font (making sure to take any opportunity to skip pages) and shoved a bunch of clipart into. An editor should have made a first or second pass through this. And I am a bit unsure about the sheer number of online resources. When I was in college (grrr, now I sound old!), my teachers insisted I use more than just the Internet for my sources.

The book does have some interesting factoids. I liked reading about the progression of Internet ads and reminiscing about the "Good Old Days" of endless popup ads. (Goddess, things were awful back in the early 2000's, weren't they?) And I appreciate that many innovations we have are because of ads.

But...what's the solution? Interactive ads? Okay...how does this get implemented? That's the only solution? Hmmm, sounds pretty...one size fits no one. And I don't know that that will actually help. There are far too many people who want absolutely no ads, not even ads they may be interested in, that are actually targets and customized to them.

And the author never addresses the biggest reason I never click ads: malware, spyware, and viruses. Internet 101: don't click ads, they lead to things getting on your computer and messing up your system! Has this changed in recent years? If so, I haven't heard.

Interesting thing to note: this book includes a "3 hour read time" symbol on the back along with the notation that you can read this on a flight between LAX and ORD. I have never seen this before, though I must admit, it's useful. I certainly got through this book remarkably fast.

Initially I gave this 4 stars, but looking back and thinking of my experience, 3 stars is more like it. I don't feel that it really gives a solution to the problem, it doesn't have the polished feel of a real journalistic book (grammar, spelling, text design, etc.), and it just felt too basic, too top-level. A good start, but by no means comprehensive - just like your average college student's English paper.

Konami Kanata was born on July 3, 1958, in Nagano, Japan.� A veteran manga artist Konami made her professional debut in 1982 with the serialized comic Petit Cat Jam-Jam for Kodansha's semenal shoujo manga magazine NakaYoshi. The daughter of an elementary school teacher, most of Konami's stories are for readers of all ages making her one of the most accessible artists in recent history.

In her nearly thirty year career, Konami has penned more than a dozen comic series, with the majority of them focusing on cats and pets. Konami is well regarded within the pet-manga community for her keen sense of cat ecology. Her ability to observe and render feline behavior has earned her respect from the Japanese manga community as a whole. How cute lol

I read this manga at a bookstore one time and I couldn't stop laughing. I had to refrain from cackling like a crazy hyena on helium. It is so funny and this being the first manga in color printing . I can't wait for the next three volumes to come out.

I randomly came across this in a bookstore and couldn't put it down. It's amazing. The "chapters" are very short, so I keep it at my desk at work for when I need a quick mental break. Several coworkers have commented on the cute cover and were delighted with the illustrations when I let them flip through. I can't wait for the next volume.

Very Articulate

Normally, I don't write reviews. A previous reviewer received a terrible copy of this book, most likely from a reseller. After balking on the purchase of this book, I finally broke down and, despite the negative review, purchased a new copy through Amazon. I'm glad I did!

As an adult learner going back to school (full-time), my anxieties are extremely high. New Beginnings offers a variety of ways to explain present day academia, college culture, classroom etiquette and suggestions to make the most of your study time. The chapters listed are:

The book is extremely comprehensive and well worth buying. I give five stars to the author with my appreciation!

This Study Bible Contains a Small Reference Library!

I was looking for a New American Standard Bible translation to use for my writing which would complement my other translations at home. This hardcover edition of The MacArthur Study Bible (Updated Edition) definitely provided me so much more than just the basic, inexpensive, hardbound NASB translation that I was looking for.

The text is easy to read, printed on (thin) quality paper and is loaded with study features. Each page of my Large Print Edition is nicely arranged for study with a double-column format and relevant study notes at the bottom of each page. The notes are in a different font style so they are distinct from the biblical text. A center column on each page contains additional verse references and literal word renderings.

Some of the features include a pretty traditional set of maps, an excellent concordance and an exceptional series of charts spread throughout the Old and New Testaments, providing a tremendous amount of relevant study information. The placement of the charts and study notes on the applicable page make referencing the material much simpler than other Study Bibles, like the Thompson Chain Reference Bible and the Scofield Study Bible. A general Introduction to the Bible is also included, along with information on How We Got The Bible, How To Study The Bible and a nice explanation on how to best use the general format of this Bible. The OT and NT have an additional introduction, as well as information on the Pentateuch (First five books of the OT) and an introduction to the OT Prophets. Each book of the OT and NT also have its own individual introduction.

As you can see, this isn't your grandfather's Bible. It's a fully-equipped Study Bible with enough helpful reference material to keep you busy for quite some time! The notes and other material are written with the general reader in mind; that is, they are very helpful and you don't have to be a Bible scholar to understand them. That in itself is a big plus.

The hardcover I purchased comes with a dust jacket and because I chose the Large Print Edition, it is a rather thick, heavy book (2 1/2 inches thick & over 4 and a half pounds). Thankfully, I don't plan on carrying it around with me, and it will stay on my computer desk at home. With such a large volume, I am concerned how well the binding will hold up over time, since it is not a stitched binding? Whether it does or not, I will add an addendum to this review later on and let you know.

I got a deal on my copy from a seller on Amazon.com (60% off -- Like New), so with the NASB translation I was looking for, all of the study notes and a bushel of reference material I would want in a study Bible, it will probably come as no surprise to hear I am very pleased with The MacArthur Study Bible.

Excellent Study Bible and the large print will keep me reading.

I have owned several MacArthur Bibles. This is my first NASV of the MacArthur lineup. I have given several as gifts but I lost a couple of them while my life was going through some changes. John MacArthur's study notes have helped me understand "what the bible means by what it says." (MacArthur quote)Without the inspiration I receive from reading, studying and searching the scriptures for answers to my life's problems, and without John MacArthur to help me know what I am reading is God's Truth, I would not have made it through the many years of homelessness I went through.

I heard about John in about 1984 from someone who thought I needed some guidance. I thank that person greatly and now I am passing this information on to anyone who may need some spiritual help. If you want to grow in your Faith, you need a good teacher. This Bible IS a clear translation and explanation of the Word of God and what His Word means to all of us.

It is a life changing read, for "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing from the Word of God."

Happy with the cover, Very Happy with the content.

I've had this for a couple of months, now. The cover was not what I expected -- somewhere between soft leather and a rubbery something. Feels good, though. The inside, of course is what counts. The paper is good quality and very, very white. My dry yellow highlighter marks are quite visible, but not on the other side of the page. Same is true for my fine (.005) marker pens. My notes are clear, but don't bleed through to the other side. I like MacArthur's commentary quite a lot. The internal cross references (within the Bible text, and also within the study notes) are excellent. The NASB has become one of my favorite translations. I like the ESV and the NIV, too. When I consult a reverse-interlinear Bible (think "Berean"), I find that the NASB usually gets closer to a literal translation, though any translation will have to deal with differences in language usage and cultural customs. On the whole, I would recommend this Study Bible without hesitation.

I am a big fan of The Big Nerd Ranch Guide and their 4th edition is the best iOS programming book I could find back then. This time, I bought this new version because now Swift is taking over.

The authors really know about iOS programming and how to teach it to you. All you need to do is follow their lead. When I was reading the book, I barely feel confused. Also, they did a great job to combine learning and doing. You need to build several apps to apply the knowledge you learned into real applications. Learning by this book is easy and fun.

Simply put, for anyone who's interested in iOS Programming, this is a great book to go with.

Perfect for anyone looking to get into iOS development

This book is exactly what I was looking for. I'm relatively new to swift but I also have a decent grasp of object oriented programming, so in my case, I wasn't looking for a top to bottom explanation of how programming works (If you ARE new to programming, then I'd go with the Swift Programming book by Big Nerd Ranch). What I needed was something that would present the important iOS concepts and briefly glaze over some of the nuances of swift. This book does just that.

The authors clearly know how to teach this subject because the material flows very naturally. They slowly introduce the reader to different aspects of iOS development, that you never feel confused or overwhelmed. In addition, everything is articulated and explained really well. I've tried a few other resources - following tutorials and listening to lectures online but nothing has felt nearly as effective as this. Partly because the book does a good job of maintaining a balance of teaching you new ideas while also having you apply them first hand. This method of learning is generally much more engaging since you're presented with concepts as you need them while building apps in different chapters of the book.

That said, I can't recommend this book enough. If you want to learn the ins and outs of developing your own app, this book is a must.

Step down from 4th edition

I am a big fan of the Big Nerd Ranch series, and I think they do an amazing job of explaining code and how to write an application. I am a seasoned iOS developer, and have read their Obj-C Programming, iOS Programming 4th edition, and Swift Programming - bravo to all of them. However, this book is lacking some serious topics:

1) There is no explanation of how to use Objective-C in Swift projects. This was explained in Swift Programming briefly for a chapter, but given that a good majority of existing libraries, Stack Overflow Q&A and previous projects are written in Obj-C, this was something that definitely needed more explanation, especially for a book that claims as a complete guide to iOS dev.
2) There is no explanation of Storyboard vs. Xib. This is a debatable topic among the iOS dev community, but many prefer Xib (including myself) over the Apple-sponsored Storyboards for reasons that were explained in the 4th edition of this book. However, there is no explanation of this in the book - let alone showing the alternative approach of using Xib, which is a method many professional developers prefer (once again, debatable).
3) No mention of Core Graphics, permission inquiries (push, location, etc), singletons, Cocoapods or Git. Core Graphics could be sufficient with one chapter (4th edition dragged this on for 3), permission inquiries like push and location are too commonly used to ignore it completely, singletons are basic comp sci methodology that was well explained and used in 4th edition, Cocoapods is an absolute must for any iOS developer these days, and git could be summarized in a section with default Xcode source control (no need for remote). While the last two are not strictly iOS development, definitely would be worth mentioning.

Really hope they come out with the new edition that is more complete as this version is written entirely in Swift, meaning any new iOS developers will not look at previous editions that are written in Obj-C. Understand that not everything can be explained in a book, but could definitely take out the over-emphasis on front-end dev.
