About the Author
Mark L. Knapp (Ph.D., Penn State University, 1966) is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor Emeritus in Communication and Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. Three of his books are: "Nonverbal Communication in Human Interaction" (with J. A. Hall); "Interpersonal Communication and Human Relationships "(with A. L. Vangelisti); and "Lying and Deception in Human Interaction. "He is past president of the International Communication Association and the National Communication Association, a Fellow of the International Communication Association, and a Distinguished Scholar in the National Communication Association. He served as editor of "Human Communication Research, " and developed and edited the Sage Series in Interpersonal Communication.

Anita L. Vangelisti is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. Her work focuses on the associations between communication and emotion in the context of close, personal relationships, and she currently teaches courses on communication in personal relationships, family communication, communication and emotion, and empirical research methods. Vangelisti has published articles in journals such as Communication Monographs, Human Communication Research, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personal Relationships, Family Relations, Journal of Adolescent Research, and Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. She has published several books and is presently working on two more volumes.

A must read for understanding Indian history

Contemporary India has an outsize influence from the Sikhs. Our current prime minister is a great representative of the community (with all disclaimers attached), and it is important to understand the genesis of the community, its philosophy and its strange pre-dominance of the Indian military.
The Punjab has largely been at the cross roads of civilization has pretty much been the doorway for powers that sought to invade India. By the late 15th century India was in a state of ferment. Muslim raiders were regularly invading the country and Hinduism if it weren't for the reformist zeal of the Bhakti movement was on the defensive. The time was ripe for a compromise and it came about from the remarkable intellect of Nanak.
Born in 1469, Nanak in a short span of 40 years as a teacher, he managed to carve out a niche which panned Hinduism and Islam. Monotheistic, yet worshipping a name. Casteless, in the pursuit of purity the religion was attractive to Hindu's and Muslims alike. The continuity of the religion was maintained by the legacy of Guru's (the word Sikh is purported to come from Shiksha or instruction from Sanskrit).
Nine Gurus followed, each of them leaving a stamp on the building of the movement into a religion, but importantly being in a volatile region, the following quickly got embroiled into the politics of monarchy feuds. Political patronage from Akbar quickly translated into spite from Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangazeb. By the time of the 9th Guru, the community had a strong militant streak, having witnessed the murder of its Guru's and the desecration of its shrines.
A key turning point in Indian history is the invasion(s) of Ahmed Shah Abdali in the late 18th century. A self claimed successor to Nadir Shah (in the right to invade India) , his repeated forays into the country gave the Sikh's a space in the power struggle that ensued. Fiefdoms of Sikh influence cropped up and it was waiting for a unifying force which came in the persona of Ranjit Singh.
Ranjit Singh's rule of forty years could well mark the zenith of the Sikhs. Blessed with boundless energy and strong traits of leadership, Ranjit Singh established a Sikh kingdom which was bound by the British on the east and the Afghans on the west. His generals had made forays well into Ladakh and his army was well organized and armed. The book culminates with the death of Ranjit Singh in the year 1839.
The book is well written and a breeze to read, and its understandable that the author laments opportunities lost by the Sikhs to consolidate power being a Sikh himself. The book lacks balance in parts, with an over-epmphasis on certain aspects. But no better authority could have penned this history down and for all its flaws the book would go down as an essential for understanding Indian history

This book has more in-depth historical research than Cunningham's A history of the Sikhs that was published in 1849. The book is due for a new edition, that discusses the migration of modern Sikhs from Punjab to UK, Canada, USA in search of freedom and better life.

About the Author
Christopher Castellani is the author of three novels, including All This Talk of Love. He is the artistic director of GrubStreet and teaches in the MFA program at Warren Wilson College. He was recently awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for fiction.

you’re left feeling that you’re a better writer, reader

“The Art of Perspective” by Christopher Castellani. “The Art of…..” series is a collection of books edited by Charles Baxter. Each focuses on one aspect of literature and “The Art of Perspective” is devoted to the importance of who is telling the story and what implications and consequences ride on this choice for the writer, the reader, and the characters themselves. You’d have an idea of how enjoyable these essays are if you can recall being in a class and having the walls of the classroom disappear. Initially, you attended for a less-than-exciting reason, but soon you were hoping the class wouldn’t end. Chris’s own perspective on his art is shot through with a humility and a strength that confidently take the reader to knowledge in a way that’s … well…fun. And before you know it, you’re left feeling that you’re a better writer, reader, or (God help us) critic because you’re more aware and appreciative of much you’ve once taken for granted. Like his fiction, the essays in this little book sparkle and are propelled by whatever it is (because ultimately, who can really describe these things?) that moves a big talent. Just wonderful!

Goes beyond basic, obvious tips.

So, if you're a writer and you're tired of books that just define things in an over-simplified and unhelpful manner, then you've been waiting for this book. In essence, it assumes that you know what point of view is...but it deepens the explanation of why the narrator's perspective makes a difference in the work that you're writing. The logic is very clearly explained in terms of what each point of view method achieves in a story.

I think this is a nice step up from books that seem to cover writing techniques in basically the same way. Castellani's explanations go deeper into the close relationship between a story and who's telling the story. And if you really take your time with this book and think thoughtfully over its examples, it should illuminate your own best approach to telling your story.

Castellani provides much more than an excellent dissection of craft in this splendidly wrought discussion. He brings a wealth of experience as a teacher and conscientious artist to the questions of identity and stereotyping that challenge the twenty-first century artist/author. Castellani's work is a splendid optic for seeing the uniqueness and beauty of the multicultural and multigendered perspectives blooming in the arts today.

I have an advance reader copy of Grace Filled Marriage and the pages are already worn with notes, highlighter smear, and dog ears to mark the important pages. Practically every other page is dog eared so I can rethink the material and how I can apply it to my marriage. The grace filled insights are timely, practical and God breathed. Tim and Darcy are like you and me, they've experienced the challenges of sleeping under the covers and sharing the space of life together. They admit marriage is a tough gig unless grace is the foundation of everything we do. Tim says, "I married and angel, she (Darcy) married an idiot." Yet the two of them clung on to the grace and wisdom of God and took steps to safeguard their marriage. They know what to do when things go wrong. They know how to honor God when the going get's tough. They've battled the temptations of life and won with God's grace.

Are you pulling back from your spouse, resentful or hurting? Are you unsure of your next move? Or are you just getting married and want to safeguard the relationship you have? Grace is What it Takes

Grace - undeserved, but much needed. Usually easy to receive, makes life better for everyone involved and yet, it's hard to give. As I began to close out (for the most part) my year long reading journey of relationship building, Grace Filled Marriage had me at Grace. I know I need grace and appreciate it for myself, but I fight against giving it at times, if I think of giving it at all.

Kimmel, along with his wife, lays out the need for and workings of grace in our lives for the first quarter of the book. Kimmel then talks about the three things spouses (and people in general) need and that grace can help provide: secure love, significant purpose, and strong hope. Each topic has a chapter that speaks to the ways in which you can begin using grace to build a better relationship. For example, security is built through showing acceptance, affiliation, and affection. Significance is built up in a spouse through affirmation, attention, and (gentle) admonition. And strength encourages abilities, accomplishments, and adventure. All of these subtopics are discussed at length along with examples.

Beyond the need for security, significance, and strength, this book speaks to grace's allowance for candidness, vulnerability, differences, and mistakes. Kimmel asks you to look at graceful honesty and the little things within the bigger picture.

He also gives pointers for what it takes to sustain a marriage...he calls these points the six character muscles and compares the practice of using them to training for the running of a race. The six muscles are Faith, Integrity, Poise, Discipline, Endurance and Courage. Working on these six things allows a couple to produce the security, significance, and strength discussed earlier in the book.

Last, but not least, it takes a humble, grateful, generous, and serving heart to make a marriage work. I have to say that I really liked this book. The points were well drawn and supported. Also, I think the author was truthful without sugar coating. An example (and an ouch moment for me) was when he talked about why we shouldn't yell and scream. I'm a yeller...first thing I do when mad or frustrated is I raise my voice. When Kimmel spoke of how yelling affects others and how it makes you look and feel, it was like a punch in the stomach. I appreciate it though, because sometimes that is what it takes to change. He has many other books, including one about grace in parenting, which I'm sure I'll take a look at. I would imagine it falls along the same lines as this book.

Fresh air for a stale marriage

Oh no, another book on marriage. How many are there? And does anyone read to the end of this stuff? But hold on. Author Tim is not easily put off. He has a point of view that I think is quite missing from most of this genre's submissions. Here's the deal. We likely don't need more teaching from the holy Scriptures regarding marriage. It's there all right, but I've seen too many couples who can quote the verses but seem to have a marriage that is on life support. What is missing? Exactly what Tim K says: a profound scarcity of grace. God knows we think we understand grace, but most of us use it sparingly. Time to let it go freely into a marriage. And into all relationships for that matter. Grace saves the day. Grace revives a marriage gone stale. So I joyfully recommend this book. Because the main point of it is now the main point of my marriage. And I am so happy to say that we are really (honestly) doing great, by His grace.
