Ye'll be a bold scug to say no to the Primer

George Choundas and the folks at Writers Digest Books have published a handsomely bound book that should grace your pirate library. The look and feel of this book is absolutely fabulous. I'm sure some will wait for a soft cover edition to be printed but if you are one of them you will miss out on one of the joys of this book. The illustrations on the end pages and quality of the paper used for the interior pages make this hard bound first edition a must. If this book comes out in soft cover, it will be impossible to duplicate this fine workmanship.

As the subtitle of the Pirate Primer suggest, the book deals with the language of pirates. However, in discovering the language; you do learn something of the pirate life, both in fact and fiction. Choundas does not limit himself to the language of actual pirates but tackles the language as presented in works of literature, motion picture and television. In every case, the author states the word or phrase, provides a short definition and then provides an example of how the word or phrase is used. Choundas provides a citation for the examples which inform the reader of where they came from.

The book does not stop there. It also includes an entire chapter on the most famous pirate word uttered; that being "arrrgh!" It will come as no surprise to most pirate enthusiasts that are smart as paint that real pirates didn't say "arrrgh!"

The book also includes a lexicon of nautical terms that are sure to please anyone who has ever tried to read a seafaring book. You'll also get a section on food, drink, weapons and women.

If this isn't enough, you'll learn a hundreds of ways to greet your fellow pirate, bid the same adieu, and curse or compliment him/her.

And like a late night TV ad, I have to say "But wait, there's more." The book goes into great detail on how to form a pirate sentence, the use of adverbs and adjectives, positioning verbs, the use of transitive verbs, and other grammar rules as they apply to pirates Choundas actually covers the language as an English teacher would but the difference is you'll actually enjoy this textbook.

Did I mention the collection of Ship's Articles at the end of the book? Yep! You even get ship's articles with the Primer.

All in all, the entire book is a joy to read and joy to look at. Probably the only drawback is the lack of pictures. (That, and Choundas doesn't include any quotes from the movie The Black Swan) But let's face it; most of the pictures found in pirate books tend to be the same ones found everywhere else. In closing, not only will this book get you ready for the next Talk Like a Pirate Day, it will also make you want to rewatch all those old pirate movies and perhaps buy a pirate novel you haven't already read. The book will also act as a handy reference tool for the aspiring pirate author or acotr. Aye matey, This be your book if a pirate you must be.

Surprisingly Entertaining

A friend of mine (non-pirate) recommended this book, so I leafed through it without much expectation. Not being a fan of the genre, I expected to be none too interested. I was shocked to find that a couple of hours had passed when I looked back up! Really informative and, most importantly, fun to read. Great stuff. I've been recommending it highly to all my friends.

A Welcome Addition

This is a great volume for a writer to add to his library. As people have probably mentioned, it's separated into handy categories such as "Retorts" and "Malapropisms." My only caveat for a writer of historical fiction is to watch out for the fictional sources, which seem to be the majority. I'm not sure how authentic they are and I'm wary of that. I'd stick with sources like "General History of the Pyrates," Woodes Rogers, Exquemelin, and William Dampier. I feel safe with Defoe and Marryat, as they were experienced seamen writing for contemporaries.

The pages of Refuge resound with the deaths of her mother and grandmother and other women from cancer, the result of the American government's ongoing nuclear-weapons tests in the nearby Nevada desert. You won't find the episode in the standard history textbooks; the Feds wouldn't admit to conducting the tests until women and men in Utah, Nevada, and northwestern Arizona took the matter to court in the mid-1980s, and by then thousands of Americans had fallen victim to official technology. Parallel to her account of this devastation, Williams describes changes in bird life at the sanctuaries dotting the shores of the Great Salt Lake as water levels rose during the unusually wet early 1980s and threatened the nesting grounds of dozens of species. In this world of shattered eggs and drowned shorebirds, Williams reckons with the meaning of life, alternating despair and joy.

Her diary-like personal reflections cover such issues as helping family members through the traumatic process of living and dying with cancer. She also reflects upon women's place within the Mormon Church and touches on citizens' conflicting civic responsibilities as stewards and exploiters of the earth. Finally, she ponders federal responsibility for irradiating Utah land and people during 11 years of above-ground atomic testing. Williams's book is difficult to pigeonhole because she wrestles with a wide range of ethical questions in her struggle to find understanding. A Gem-Unique

Read this 15 years ago and just bought for a friend and reread parts. Interesting to read some of the negative reviews as this book has no negatives to it. I have given a couple copies to family members of dying patients over the years with great results. You don't have to be dying or have a dying friend to love this. It transposes nature and its cycles with human life and death in a way no other book has done. It is certainly not a book that is a page turner with an evolving plot. It is a book to be savored and reread, something like The Outermost House, quietly read and felt, and it is in that lofty a category.

Profoundly humanistic

I first read this book after a dear friend passed away from ALS. It's such a humanistic story, and yet a story of Planet Earth and the ecosystem and our place, as human beings, in the order of nature.

Yes, the author is Mormon, but she isn't preaching her religion. Rather, she takes a nondenominational and spiritual approach. Her love of nature and wildlife shines through the book, and I related to her analogies about the shrinking wetlands and loss of wildlife habitat.

I found this book profoundly moving, and when my sister-in-law's mother was diagnosed with cancer, I bought it for her.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. It can be comforting to those who fear illness, and also to those who seek a greater understanding of spirituality and the natural world.

A remarkable tribute to grief

This is a remarkable book, and well deserves its reputation. Williams juxtaposes her mother’s death by cancer with a dying wildlife refuge as the Great Salt Lake floods. While doing so, she manages to play the characteristics of specific bird species against what is going on in her family’s lives. It could easily be done poorly - but oh! she can write.

It’s a hard book, especially if you’ve watched someone die slowly. But it’s a beautiful book, too.

About the Author
Ronald Munson is Professor of Philosophy of Science and Medicine at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a nationally acclaimed bioethicist. After receiving his Ph.D. from Columbia University, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Biology at Harvard University and a Visiting Fellow at the Harvard Medical School. Munson has served as a bioethicist for the National Eye Institute and the National Cancer Institute, as an editor for the AMERICAN JOURANAL OF SURGERY, and as a member of the Washington University Human Studies Committee. Munson's other books include RAISING THE DEAD: ORGAN TRANSPLANTS, ETHICS, AND SOCIETY, THE WOMAN WHO DECIDED TO DIE: CHALLENGES AND CHOICES AT THE EDGES OF MEDICINE, REASONING IN MEDICINE, and ELEMENTS OF REASONING, 7e (with Andrew Black). He is also the author of the novels NOTHING HUMAN, FAN MAIL, NIGHT VISION, and THE HARVARD GAME.

Is there a proofreader in the house?

First the good news. Ronald Munson's "Intervention and Reflection: Basic Issues in Bioethics" is about as complete an anthology in the field of bioethics as one is going to find. There is no major topic in the field that it fails to cover in depth, both through Munson's own extensive commentary and through the many articles he chooses from other authors. I have used it as the text in bioethics courses I have taught and both the students and I have found it quite helpful.

However, its lack of basic proofreading is inexcusable in a text published by Wadsworth, an otherwise reputable publisher of academic material. On page after page one finds errors that would have been caught through a cursory reading. A few of the more egregious examples: On page 49 a patient introduced as Prosenjit Boddar becomes "Foddar" five lines down and "Poddar" at the beginning of the next paragraph. On page 124 "Paul Geisinger" turns into "Raul" at the conclusion of the same paragraph in which he is called "Paul." In the following paragraph we read of viral particles that are destroyed "within a month to sue weeks." (What are sue weeks?) On page 143 the text speaks of "abstract more issues" (instead of "moral issues," I guess). These examples of sloppy (or perhaps no) proofreading are multiplied many times over in the 900 plus pages of the book.

One expects far more than this for the outrageous price this book commands. Certainly the $150.00 plus price tag per copy leaves some spare change for Wadsworth to hire a competent copy editor. Ronald Munson, who gives every indication from his writings of being a knowledgeable bioethicist, should be embarrassed that a book with such sloppy editing has come out under his name.

Sloppy

It is appalling how many typographical errors this book contains! It is absolutely sloppy. For instance, I am currently reading about that oh-so-famous book by Aldous Huxley "The Brace New World"! There is also that infamous medical experiment in Tuskegee committed against African "Ameircans". This is supposed to be an educational text about ethics. How ethical is it to charge this kind of money for a book the publishers couldn't even be bothered to run a spell-check program on?

So many typographical and spelling errors.....

I would have given this book at least 4 stars, if not for the many typographical and spelling errors. The editors did a terrible job reviewing this. There are so many errors it results in very frustrated reading at times. The content of this book overall isn't bad and is quite interesting. But the abundance of errors really distracts from the overall content.
