The Valentine Infantry Tank III, a private venture design from Vickers-Armstrong, was the 3rd of Great Britain's infantry tank designs. Though not the 1st tank to go into battle against the Axis in WWII, the Valentine has the distinction of having the highest production numbers of any wartime British tank, and arguably the most variations. A total of 8,275 Valentines were produced in no fewer than 11 major variants. Early versions of the vehicle were equipped with gasoline engines, while a diesel powered the later Marks. The turret also saw development, with later models fit with a more elongated design. The Valentine received its baptism of fire with the British 8th Army in Operation Crusader in North Africa during July 1941, just the beginning of a long career, as they would eventually take part in combat in both the European and Pacific Theaters. After the war, Valentines continued to serve several British Commonwealth armies as late as the 1950s. Besides fighting under the Union Jack, Valentines saw action with the armed forces of Canada, the Soviet Union, Australia, and New Zealand. Illustrated with 250 photos, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings. 88 pages.

Valentine Tank Walk Around

The British Valentine tank was not the best of WW2, but since it was about the best the Brits had at the time, over 8200 were made. The early versions had 2lbr cannon (40mm) later had 6 lbr (57mm). Key differences were found in which mark had a 2 man turret vs. 3 man turret.

This Walk Around has photos of the Mark III, Mark VI photos and Mark IX. Photos by author David Doyle and Dennis Trowbridge are fantastic. Unfortunately, the photos of the Mark VI were taken indoors and the tank looks blue and on the darker side. These photos are OK, but there are no interior shots to show the difference of a 2 vs 3 man turret. A line drawing would have been very useful here.

As a modeler, I would absolutely recommend this book to someone building a version of the Valentine. The captions are excellent, there is a ton of information helpful to modelers, armor buffs, definitely a book to add to the library, just not quite up to the usual gold star standard found in the Walk Around Series (many of them authored by David Doyle).

PHILOSOPHERS AT TABLE, by Raymond Boisvert and Lisa Heldke, takes you places to revisit the simple act of eating. By chapter , I was thinking about hospitality and recalling one of my favorite dining experiences in Mexico...

During college my sister and I flew down to the Yucatan Peninsula to visit a friend studying abroad. We had the luxury of having this friend as our personal tour guide, translator and navigator. One day, blond and pure-as-the-driven-Minnesota-snow, the three of us set out for one of the local beaches, and after a bumpy, goat-and-chicken-crowded bus ride, arrived at piece of rural coastline seemingly in the middle of nowhere.

A dirt path led us to the beach. We stretched our towels out in the sand, stripped down to bathing suits, slathered on a touch of SPF15 and then closed our eyes to soak up that beautiful Mexican sunshine. Some time later we woke up to find ourselves surrounded by a posse of dark skinned, wide-eyed kids. They weren’t doing anything, just standing there gawking at us. Being surrounded by these strangers was frightening, and who knows, maybe even a bit dangerous, but it didn’t take our friend long to determine that these kids posed no threat. They just hadn’t ever seen fair-skinned blonds before so we were quite the exotica. In fact, they couldn’t wait to take us home and show us to their parents! We ended up following them down another packed dirt path to a structure they called home. It was a simple hut, the kind I had seen in National Geographic — stakes, thatched roof, dirt floor, with a cooking fire inside, no furniture, chickens running around outside. We were invited to stay for dinner. A parent reached for a plate of what looked like a corn-mush roll of sorts with some sort of filling inside. They were so happy we were in their home and so eager to share their food with us! Politely and reluctantly (all I could think of was the surrounding filth and lack of refrigeration), I had a bite or two, trying as all get out to be a gracious guest while practicing some self-preservation. The mere thought of what I might be eating made me turn green.

This story came to mind as I read about the challenges of the modern hostess, that hospitality, in a modern sense at least, needs to include consciousness of and a striving to meet the variety of guests’ dietary needs. Being ushered to a dirt floor to dine on an unrefrigerated
(but beautiful in its own way) yellow mush amidst all these smiling children still remains a profoundly memorable hospitality experience for me. The concept that those children had any responsibility to meet my dietary needs (at minimum, no food poisoning please) in order to be hospitable seems ludicrous. The very lack of what they had to offer laid bare the beauty of their graciousness. Even the horrible Montezuma’s revenge I suffered that night didn’t alter my memory of basking in that family’s hospitality. All this happened over 30 years ago in a different time & culture, so perhaps there’s no point in comparing it to modern hospitality. But just how can sitting on a dirt floor and dining on the worst food I ever ate be “hospitality” like that I’ve experienced as a guest in a well-appointed home with an espresso machine and high thread count sheets?

So expect your mind to travel with this book! One of my favorite things about it is how it employs stories and experience as a means for understanding philosophy. A highly recommended read for anyone who loves eating and the multi-dimensional ways food fuels life. Order-up!

Professor Subrata Bhattacharjee, known by his friends as Sooby, earned a B.Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1983 and his Ph.D. from Washington State University, Pullman, USA in 1988. After two years of post-doctoral work on a NASA project, he joined San Diego State University in 1991 and currently holds Professorship in Mechanical Engineering Department and Adjunct Professorship in Computer Science Department.

Professor Bhattacharjee has been actively involved in research in radiation heat transfer, combustion, computational thermodynamics, and development of software for educational purposes. For his dissertation, he developed a modified two-flux method (Effective Angle Method) for calculating radiative source term and used this model to study two-way coupling between radiation and fluid dynamics in a laminar diffusion flame. Working on a project on jet flow in boundary layers, he came upon a new non-dimensional group that compares a known pressure drop with viscous forces. This number is being used in textbook and literature in connection with electronic cooling.

Throughout his research career, Dr. Bhattacharjee has been interested in uncovering the mechanism of flame spread over solid fuels, especially in a microgravity environment. His work helped establish the dominance of radiation heat transfer in near quiescent environment. He has been a PI and co-PI of several projects funded by NASA. Some of his contributions include: 1. Discovery of the phenomenon that flame over thick fuel bed in a quiescent microgravity environment self-extinguishes irrespective of the oxygen level; 2. Development of a formula for a critical thickness that renders a fuel thick in such an environment; 3. Development of two formulas for flame spread rate, one in the thin limit and one in the thick limit, which are the only flame spread formulas ever developed in the microgravity regime. Several of his experiments on flames over solids have been conducted aboard NASA's Space Shuttles, Sounding Rockets, and Russia's Mir Space Station. One of his recently proposed experiments is currently under design to be conducted in the International Space Station.

Under a current grant from NASA, Prof. Bhattacharjee and his team is building a 10 m tall Flame Tower at SDSU to conduct some fundamental experiments to predict the behavior of flames in a gravity free environment of a spacecraft. These ground based work is in support of the proposed space based experiment. In this work, researchers from Gifu University, Japan, are collaborating with SDSU.

Supported by NSF, Dr. Bhattacharjee has been developing a novel cyber infrastructure for multi-scale approach to thermodynamic data and chemical equilibrium services. Users can now plug in these services and "outsource" the data used in their thermofluids calculations. By simply altering key words such as NASA, NIST, or AB-INITIO, for example, they can change the source of data used in their research applications. Likewise, equilibrium calculations can be integrated into any CFD code written in FORTRAN, MATLAB, or any other language through a relatively new technology called web services. The chemical equilibrium program developed by Dr. Bhattacharjee's group is equally powerful as NASA's benchmark CEA and offers a built-in parallel architecture.

Prof. Bhattacharjee's passion for making thermodynamics easier to master led to the development of a web based software called TEST, the Expert System for thermodynamics (www.pearsonhighered.com/bhattacharjee), which has been used by students, professionals and educators from around the world. Several articles and one book have been written about the use of TEST in thermodynamic education.

Great text, though some typos in 1st edition

Aside from a fair number of typos in the first edition (including in the related MasteringEngineering content), I have found this to be the best Thermodynamics textbook for use in my course. The layered approach is very helpful. I've examined a handful of other popular texts, and this one stood out as having good descriptions of important concepts and a focus on applications. Other texts are either outdated or just plain boring. My students agreed. I hope to see this text in a second edition soon, and I will continue to use the MasteringEngineering and included TestCalcs and Animations.

Book is in good conditions, but the content of it is not that great. I would recommend another book, especially if you're taking thermodynamics for the first time. I rented it so I'm just going to return it. Definitely not worth buying it.
