During my time as an undergrad at Cornell University, one of my favorite classes has been a renewable energy course taught by one of the authors, Lou Albright, with Energy Systems Engineering as the primary textbook. Apart from being clear, well-written, and well-organized, the book does a great job of blending background information, justification for technologies, discussion of practical issues, and quantitative analysis of systems in a manageable and engaging way. Working through it was very empowering and it played a big role in getting me excited about energy. It's also very accessible as a reference for specific projects. I would highly recommend it to other students interested in learning how to work with and analyze energy systems.

Susie Orbach is a psychotherapist, writer and co-founder of The Women's Therapy Centre in London and The Women's Therapy Centre in New York. What a Relief

This book introduced me to the idea that compulsive eaters like myself have something invested in being overweight, which helped me understand my own lose-weight-gain weight cycles. The ideas in this book plus a 6-month program with a health counselor got me off the dieting cycle I've been on for the past 25 years. Going from fat to thinner -- changing my body shape dramatically -- brings up a lot of fear and anger with me, and this book has helped me acknowledge that. Outside help has been great, too. Though the title seems radical, its not a feminist rally cry. I think its really helpful for people struggling with their body size.

So Much Insight

I haven't been a big fan of the concept of feminism in the past and I had to be talked into buying this book by a friend, but I have to say it has done wonders for me, my attitude and my understanding of my relationship with food, fat and my family. UNlike other self-help books, this one is not designed to take you step-by-step through the process, but was, instead, designed to help people create their own support groups to discuss issues associated with weight and compulsive eating.

I have never considered myself a compulsive eater, so this is not something I would have gone to a group for or read about. But the book holds many insights around weight, attention, nurturance, the ability to care for oneself, a woman's relationship with her mother and more that hit home with me. I finished the book a few days ago and I've already dropped four pounds. I'm not dieting, but I have been addressing the issues that the book triggered for me. I expect that the weight will continue to come off naturally as a result of this work being completed. It's great to have had this resource.

Different approach from Evelyn Tribole

I first read a similar book by Evelyn Tribole called "Intuitive Eating". Both of these books approach weight loss the same way - figure out why you are eating, and then work at it from a psychological approach, rather than going on a specific diet.

What I like about Evelyn's book is that it is for the individual to do by herself, whereas Susan's book is more for a group therapy approach. She also has some other interesting reasons about why I might be overweight, which made for very interesting reading.
However, between the two books, I preferred Evelyn's because it gave more specific information to work with and let me do it by myself, rather than a full support group (as a stay-at-home mom with a 3-year-old, very important).
I did appreciate both books though, because they emphasized the same thing - the overeating is not because of lack of willpower, but because of psychological reasons - and that makes lots of sense to me.

Difficult to understand concepts made easy

I have been an avid consumer of self help books. Post many a read and possibly after reaching the tender reading age of 41, I realize that fiction by great authors steals a march over many of these. After all great fiction does spring from a keen observation of human nature and its vagaries. Even then I find myself going back to self help in the interest of time and in a bid to selfishly absorb and fill the many lacunae in my personality. But I have managed to steer clear of anything on spirituality and the genre, until now.
Though the title says spirituality and its spirit, this book actually is a lucid explanation of concepts. Concepts which are difficult to grasp and tough to incorporate. Just to expand (from a personal thought)- that "There is actually no Past or Future, but only the Present"! You may imagine a huge whiteboard as the present and all past and future events are pegs on the board. I guess we humans find it tough to grasp this, at least I do, since we are so accustomed to thinking linearly and in a continuum.
The book does an great job of explaining such difficult concepts. I am not sure if it tackles this one since I have yet to finish reading it and I will update once its done - but its already explained many more such conundrums which I have to thank the author for.

An Amazing Study of and Engagement with Ricoeur

Paul Ricoeur is a philosophical and theological thinker whose scope and economy of writing is unmatched in this age. Still more, it is difficult to find philosophers and theologians who can adequately engage with him. That the author, Richard Kearney, was a former student of Ricoeur's still makes no guarantee that he can do so. But Kearney does, indeed.

Kearney's book is first class in this field of thinking on Ricoeur. I would consider it as important as any of Ricoeur's own books. Though it is not "critical", this books lays out a wonderful exposition of many of Ricoeur's points. In this sense, it is better than a critical approach which often puts the progect of critiquing before understanding what is being read or thought.

classic tale+clever twist=great reading!

I'm glad I came across this book a day or two ago because it's a delightfully clever and fresh twist on an old classic tale.

Take everything you know about Robin Hood and his Merry Men and turn it on its ear. What if Robin weren't a young man, but an 18 year old girl?

In order to maintain and strengthen his position in the land, Lord Robert Locksley arranges a marriage between his eldest daughter Robin Ann to one Phillip Darniel, the sheriff of Nottingham! Robin, who's always been headstrong and much more interested in male pursuits such as going out into the woods and archery, will have none of it and would rather leave everything she knows and loves, including her younger sister maid Marian, behind and fend for herself in the woods. Slowly but surely her sense of honor and natural leadership has outlaws and the downtrodden of Nottingham flocking to her like moths to flame. They don't know Robin is a young girl though, as she's disguised her voice and is never seen without her hood.

This is such an interesting twist on the old tale, and told in such a great way that it's like being introduced to these classic characters for the first time. Twists on Will Scarlet and Little John as well as Robin herself makes this a fun and exciting read from the first word to the last. It also introduced a world of possibilities and problems for the characters. Will Robin ever reveal her secret, her true identity? Will she ever see her family again? When she starts developing feelings for one of her Merry Men who still thinks she's a boy, how will she handle this? These are the types of clever alterations that make this novel fresh and new even though most people are already pretty familiar with the legend of Robin Hood whether it be from the literature or the score of films that have been made over the years.

The only complaint I have is that it has to end! Getting into the characters that ArceJeager has breathed new life into, I would love to see what other adventures they get into as they get older and get into more hijinks.

A great and fun work that's exciting, entertaining and heartfelt, I would love for this to be a series but if not, I'm still glad I got a chance to read this fantastic new take on well established characters. This author is now on my radar!

A very creative adaptation of the Robin Hood legend

As with the author, one of my favorite books when I was a kid was Howard Pyle's classic "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood." Likewise, one of my favorite TV shows in the 1950s was a British import, "The Adventures of Robin Hood," with a lively theme song that went "Feared by the bad, loved by the good, Robin Hood... Robin Hood... Robin Hood" (or something like that). And with all of the movies made over the years, the story of Robin Hood and his merry men is one of the most popular and enduring legends from medieval Europe.

Author R.M. ArceJaeger has done a fine job with her own account of the legend, with one major twist--Robin Hood was actually a young girl, Robin Ann Locksley, daughter of Lord Robert of Locksley. In the author's version of the story, Robin's father has betrothed her to the Sheriff of Nottingham, who, as the king's appointed tax collector, was hated and feared by all. To escape her fate, Robin ran away into the depths of nearby Sherwood Forest and became known as Robin of the Hood, or simply Robin Hood, as others, mostly outlaws or farmers who had been dispossessed by the sheriff, began following her. There's one catch: out of necessity, Robin had disguised herself as a man.

A number of the familiar characters and incidents from the legend were in the book. Little John, of course, was a principal character, as was the Sheriff of Nottingham. Allan was a talented minstrel who sang about Robin Hood's exploits and spread his (her) fame. Marian was an important character, but not in the same role as the Maid Marian in some versions of the story. One character that I missed was Friar Tuck; however, other characters provided enough comic relief that he wasn't essential to the story.

The author's writing style was polished and professional. Her descriptions were detailed enough to describe a scene or location without being verbose. Dialogues were realistic, and the author worked in enough archaic Middle English words to give the story an authentic medieval feel.

"Robin: Lady of Legend" was a very creative adaptation of the old Robin Hood legend, one that I enjoyed very much. There was enough tension and suspense to hold my attention. At the heart of the story was a tender romance that was complicated by Robin's reluctance to reveal her true gender. The story built to a big finish with a thrilling climax and a very satisfying ending.

Kudos to the author for polishing up an old story and making it fresh and new.

Wonderful Retelling of A Classic Figure

There are so many books, movies, etc., on the legend of Robin Hood that I was really impressed that the author was able to come up with something fresh and original. In this case, Robin is a young woman living as a young man in order to avoid being married to the Sheriff of Nottingham. There are some other noteworthy changes with the relationships that Robin has with the other characters, but I don't want to spoil the surprises. The author does not simply retell the same story with a woman instead of a man, but this new version does stay true to the moral lessons that accompany the traditional Robin Hood legends about helping others less fortunate. This is a very enjoyable interpretation of a classic story.
