The standard for MSE books.

Taking a materials science/mechanical engineering course that uses this book and I love it.

Very clear writing/explanations, use of intuitive notation, problems gradually get tougher at a reasonable rate. Although my area is more in control systems, this MSE book has been really interesting. I'd take another course in it if I had time.

Book definitely assumes you have the prerequisites though -- some of the math can get tricky, but's all reasonable for an undergrad. Excellent colors/visually appealing. I think MSE is a very visual subject, and since I'm not a visual person, it really helps to see what's going on with clear diagrams/pictures.

My professor said this is a classic MSE book and I can see why. Two thumbs up.

Covers all the Material you need

This book covers everything you'll want to know for the foundation of material science and engineering. Great book that explains the concepts well and efficiently. I've gone to this book several times for covering topics I didn't cover in class, and the book did a great job of catching me up. I even used this for other classes like Fluid Mechanics or Heat Transfer. It's got it all. The example problems, while sometimes basic, provided you a great way to know if you understand the (wait for it....) material!

Love this book

I sold my newer edition and got an older edition (costs less money). This book has great detail and great at explaining things. I am a materials engineer and this is by far my most referenced book for a jumping off point. If you are unclear about something, I would start with this book and it will provide general details. After that, you can use resources that are more focused on a certain subject. I use it to refresh on basic ideas all of the time. This book provides such a strong foundation you would be crazy not to have it on your book shelf for reference if you do anything really materials oriented.

If we consider a man as half a being and woman as the other half of that Being, we then arrive by logical deduction to the amorous attraction of the opposites. Thirsty for love, souls always wander in search of their other half, their twin soul, from which they have been separated since the dawn of creation. On the path of life we always need another being who can fill us, who can supply with complete exactitude that which we lack, not only in the physiological aspect, but also in the psychosomatic and spiritual aspects. Each of our physical and psychic functions needs a very human supplement; this is a natural necessity in every living being. The mutual combination of elements of nature, the chemical weddings, the sexual combination of opposed elements in order to achieve a perfect whole, constitutes the living foundation of everything that is, of everything that has been, and of everything that will be. It is demonstrated that the chemical elements are attracted and amorously combined in accordance with the complementary number of electrons. Every scientist of chemistry knows by means of observation and experience that once the perfect sheath is settled by a number of electrons, sodium with a leftover electron is sexually united to chlorine, which lacks an electron. What is astounding about this, what is marvelous, is that the sodium with an extra electron can never in life be combined with other alkalis that are composed in an analogous manner. In the depths of these wonders, these prodigies of love, we find the marriage of elements and the fundamental stone upon which all chemistry rests. Without any exaggeration we can affirm that this same principle of sexual attraction of the opposites is always applicable, without any exception, to the attraction and marriage of men and women.

A shocking discovery
By A reluctant initiate
Reading this book proved an enlightening and humiliating experience. The book itself, but especially Chapter 16: The Inner Remembering of One's Self, proved especially shocking. Before reading this work and the referenced chapter, I did not understand how unconsciously I was behaving. In the process of reading it, I discovered that all of the impressions I had been receiving were unconscious. Once I started consciously transforming impressions, my will-in harmony with my Being-took physical expression in my body. This experience may not sound magical, but it certainly was for me. This is what Master Samael talks about as awakening one's spatial sense, or so I presume.

This realization shocked, disturbed and isolated me. It was exceedingly profound and, ultimately, an absolutely unbelievable experience. Truly, these words do not do justice to what I went through.

I recommend this book for someone who has recently encountered the path and wishes for further enlightenment. Strive for the Good, the True and the Beautiful against all odds!

...It is necessary to begin by awakening the consciousness.

We walk around with our consciousness fully asleep, and we don't even realize it. In fact we are offended to hear such a statement. But this is reality. Reading this book will help you to understand this for yourself, which is the first step in awakening the consciousness.

It is a comprehensive book full of thought-provoking information that will (hopefully) jolt you to the realization that it is time to stop daydreaming and fantasizing, and wake up!

A Detailed, Scholarly, But Accessible Treatment

This is accessible to the layman, but because the author covers wrecking in great detail from several angles, some parts are drier than others; for instance, the lengthy chapter on the history of legislation pertaining to wrecking might interest the general reader less than the bulk of the book that describes the reality of wrecking. For such an elusive subject, there's an impressive body of substantiated fact for the professional historian, yet enough verve and dash for the casual reader who just asks, "Did it really happen?"

Taken together, and although brain malformations (H. Sarnat & P. Curatolo, 2007) and oncology (W. Grisold & R. Soffietti) are covered in detail in other volumes of the same series and therefore only briefly addressed here, these considerations justify the number of volumes, and the number of authors who contributed from all over the world. Experts in the different subspecialties also contributed to design the general framework and contents of the book. Special emphasis is given to the developmental aspect, and normal development is reminded whenever needed – brain, muscle and the immune system. The course of chronic diseases into adulthood and ethical issues specific to the developing nervous system are also addressed.

The Serenity Principle helped me see addiction from the perspective of one afflicted with the problem, as well as how difficult the road to recovery is. It offers a fresh approach to both situations, as opposed to the tried, and often failed, feel bad in order to feel better. It is a very compassionate and humane approach. exceptionally insightful

Colin Rowe's essays are exceptionally insightful and truly enlightening. These essays were written decades ago but they're still enormously valuable and still very fresh. The first essay, from which the book takes its title and probably Rowe's most famous, is an analysis of the geometrical and proportional similarities between Le Corbusier's villa at Garches and Palladio's Villa Malcontenta. A brief but dense tour de force. Perhaps his next most famous essay is "Transparency: Literal and Phenomenal," written with Robert Slutzky. Also a real eye-opener. In other essays he discusses the curious relationship between the Chicago frame and modern architecture; neo-classicism and modern architecture; mannerism and modern architecture; La Tourette; 19th century thinking about architectural character and composition; and the architecture of utopia. These essays make you think, look at things differently, look at things you hadn't noticed, and they ultimately enlarge your understanding of architecture and your architectural field of vision. I'm grateful to Colin Rowe for that. After reading this book I bought his three-volume collection of essays, "As I Was Saying." I just had to have more. The essays in this book put your mind to work but Rowe's writing is also quite engaging. He's a genuinely independent thinker and a rigorous one too. These are wonderful essays and the book is highly recommended.
