Good read ... funny, romantic- basically what we wish our lives were at 17 ..

Famous in love - Good read ... funny, romantic- basically what we wish our lives were at 17 ..

1. Good book, easy to read, finished it in two days.

2. Why wasn't the age difference between the main characters rainer and paige a bigger issue?

3. The ending could have been better, I felt so lost (not because I didn't understand it) but after pages upon pages of paige being so conflicted about her choice she ended up picking a guy on a whim? Pity maybe Idk I was annoyed by that.

4. Paige getting this role for locked turned into boy drama instead of her achievements and future as an actress. (That was her dream, no?)
However Paige is 17, young, inexperienced and somewhat too trusting (like we all were at 17) so I totally understand her decision making and getting swept away by two hot actors.
So 3 stars for that.

Good story for any age - especially if you find movie stars intriguing.

I enjoyed this book. I only knew about it because I discovered the television show first. While the story is well told and fairly captivating, it doesn't match the show in several pretty significant ways. I will leave that to the reader to discover should they choose to contrast and compare. Overall, I found myself pretty enthralled. The main character drew me in. I enjoyed experiencing newfound fame along with Paige.

At first I didn't know whether I would stick with the story since I discovered that the setting and other key points didn't match the show, but I hung in there. I am glad I did. Underlying the obvious love triangle is an element of human compassion that you feel as the story develops. I liked that there was something in this book that I could think about and ponder a bit. While entertaining, it also made me consider things in my life that I hadn't wanted to mull over. I can't wait to find out how this all ends.

It was a quick read, but it wasn't exactly my cup of tea. I'm debating whether I should give the sequel a shot or not. The characters aren't really fleshed-out and I didn't really like the main character or side characters. Also, there was a lot that was inaccurate about filming a movie that I couldn't easily look past. I'm probably just being uptight, but, like I said, I don't think it was for me.

"One of the Greatest Poets of All Time"

The Italian philosopher, Fransesco Petracha (1304-74), who was responsible for the recovery of many Latin manuscripts, who was one of the primary causes of the revival of Latin letters, and who, like Dante, wrote much of his poetry in the vulgar tongue, is one of the greatest poets of all time and one of the most influential men in the history of the western world. Of the poems he wrote in his native Italian, 366 have survived under the name "Canzoniere" (short-song). Roughly 45 of the 366 poems are provided here in an excellent, faithful translation which steers clear of that cancerous and faulty element in poetry--the rhyme. They were carefully selected for their content, so the discouraging number of 45 poems seems bigger when the editor's subtle discretion is taken into account. The basis of these poems--like Dante's Beatrice and Catallus' Lesbia--rests mostly upon Petrach's undying love for Laura, but at times his verse resounds with political and religious themes, and with praises of Rome's past and the Italy of his own time. Every poem will be an enjoyable read; they are always profound and inspiring in their glorification of feminine beauty; and the vivid and picturesque allusions to nature are always soothing and edifying. One may easily see, after reading Petrach's "Canzoniere," Horace handing Petrach his pen and Virgil his laurel crown, for they were as real to him as the lines of his poetry. They guided him through the fields of Italy and lent him breaths of inspiration along the way. Petrarch was anything but a mean and vulgar poet; he deservedly stands out as great amongst the greatest. Also included are some short prose works (letters) which throw some significant light upon the life and character of Petrach. This conveniently sized collection of the poet laureate's works is thoroughly recommended.

The Start Of A New Kind Of Life.

The influence by Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) on the poetry of Italy and the rest of western Europe was remarkable. But as important as his italian poems were his letters and essays. These writings discussed a way of life and thinking that formed the basis of Humanism (where - in short - the emphasis is on human accomplishments and not on God).

As a writer of letters (mainly his correspondence with friends and colleagues) he wrote in the style and used the accomplished tradition of classic writers such as Cicero and Seneca. But in-spite the influence of this tradition Petrarca's letters are very personal and authentic.
In a vivid way these letters describe the author and his surroundings. He writes about the many travels he made and his interest in Antiquity.

One of the most important documents by his hand is his description of him walking up the Mount Ventoux and the description of the thoughts he had during that long walk are one of the most important building stones of the Italian Renaissance, the start of a new kind of life.

A thoughtful selection in translation

Petrarch just isn't my favorite. That said, he is worth reading, savoring; his verse and prose are worth reflecting upon. This is a great writer and mind of an important time period in Western European history and culture that is often overlooked. Petrarch is a product of Feudal Italy and the Western Schism (the Avignon Popes) and his writings give a new dimension to the time period, particularly for anyone who already enjoys the history, music, painting, tapestries, sculptures and architecture of this era.

Italy and France are on the very verge of that explosion of cultural growth and development we now call the Renaissance. This is that very pregnant spot on the time line of Western European history when everything is about to change (within a hundred years or so)and Petrarch is an important voice and a significant person of the time.

The end notes and introduction are both very well done -- as one would expect of anything associated with Oxford's World Classics series. Both the introduction and the notes add significant contextual value to the author's works. This little selection of his works in translation is a volume very worthy of any Anglophone's bookcase.

About the Author
HANNAH ARENDT (1906-1975) was one of the foremost political philosophers of the twentieth century. She fled Europe for the United States in 1941 and spent her career as a professor at a number of American universities, including the New School for Social Research and University of Chicago. Be warned

This is hardly a worth-while collection from the work of this brilliant thinker -- especially at the price. The book is 133 pages and of the 4 interviews, the first, from 1964, is important but can be found in "The Portable Hannah Arendt". The second, also from 1964, is a brief rehash of the Eichmann affair that falls far short of Arendt's responses included in the "Portable". The third, dated 1970, is a thoughtful review of the left-wing, especially American, political scene at the time, and its 36 pages provide the only reason for buying this book. The fourth, from 1973, is an embarrassment to the editors. It's a bizarrely truncated "reconstruction" of Arendt's responses to a television interview conducted in French, which, between the editing and original (translated) level of questioning, left Ms. Arendt with little to say -- sadly discourteous for a last interview.

Not her best but interesting

Not her best but interesting. She had an incisive and original mind and tried to explain and come to terms with the major problem of her era. The link between Fascism, antisemitism, economic depression, and unemployment is hopefully a bygone constellation of horrors but Primo Levi said, It happened and therefore it can happen again. So Hannah Arendt is worth paying attention to. Peter E. Schrag

This is a collection of interviews with Hannah Arendt spanning the period from approximately 1964 to 1973. The interviews cover the controversy over Arendt's "Eichman in Jerusalem," her other works, the student protest movement, freedom, history, Watergate, an obscure reference to her relationship with Martin Heidegger, and even a term not heard of since 1976, the "credibility gap." Throughout it all, Arendt presents herself as a thoughtful and wise person.

Arendt offers some insights into her view of her own work. For example, she didn't consider herself a "philosopher" because that seemed to be too masculine an occupation for her:

//ARENDT: I am afraid I have to protest. I do not belong to the circle of philosophers. My profession, if one can even speak of it at all, is political theory. I neither feel like a philosopher, nor do I believe that I have been accepted in the circle of philosophers, as you so kindly suppose. But to speak of the other question that you raised in your opening remarks: you say that philosophy is generally thought to be a masculine occupation. It does not have to remain a masculine occupation! It is entirely possible that a woman will one day be a philosopher �…*//

A fascinating feature of these interviews is that they provide an access to Arendt's experience of history, which is so very different from our experience. For example, for anyone living today, the idea that there was a time when we didn't know about Auschwitz is easy to forget, and with it the difference between the shock of 1933 and the shock of 1943:

//ARENDT: Yes, very frequently. I have seen it in people as a result of shock. You know, what was decisive was not the year 1933, at least not for me. What was decisive was the day we learned about Auschwitz.

GAUS: When was that?

ARENDT: That was in 1943. And at first we didn’t believe it— although my husband and I always said that we expected anything from that bunch. But we didn’t believe this because militarily it was unnecessary and uncalled for. My husband is a former military historian, he understands something about these matters. He said don’t be gullible, don’t take these stories at face value. They can’t go that far! And then a half year later we believed it after all, because we had the proof. That was the real shock. Before that we said: Well, one has enemies. That is entirely natural. Why shouldn’t a people have enemies? But this was different. It was really as if an abyss had opened. Because we had the idea that amends could somehow be made for everything else, as amends can be made for just about everything at some point in politics. But not for this. This ought not to have happened. And I don’t mean just the number of victims. I mean the method, the fabrication of corpses and so on— I don’t need to go into that. This should not have happened. Something happened there to which we cannot reconcile ourselves. None of us ever can. About everything else that happened I have to say that it was sometimes rather difficult: we were very poor, we were hunted down, we had to flee, by hook or by crook we somehow had to get through, and whatever. That’s how it was. But we were young. I even had a little fun with it— I can’t deny it. But not this. This was something completely different. Personally I could accept everything else.

ARENDT: That was in Berlin. Unfortunately, I had to lie to him. I couldn’t let the organization be exposed. I told him tall tales, and he kept saying, “I got you in here. I shall get you out again. Don’t get a lawyer! Jews don’t have any money now. Save your money!” Meanwhile the organization had gotten me a lawyer. Through members, of course. And I sent this lawyer away. Because this man who arrested me had such an open, decent face. I relied on him and thought that here was a much better chance than with some lawyer who himself was afraid.

GAUS: And you got out and could leave Germany?

ARENDT: I got out, but had to cross the border illegally �… � my name had not been cleared.

ARENDT: Not even that. Or, that too. First of all, the generally political became a personal fate when one emigrated. Second �… � friends “coordinated” or got in line. The problem, the personal problem, was not what our enemies did but what our friends did. In the wave of Gleichschaltung (coordination),‖ which was relatively voluntary— in any case, not yet under the pressure of terror— it was as if an empty space formed around one. I lived in an intellectual milieu, but I also knew other people. And among intellectuals Gleichschaltung was the rule, so to speak. But not among the others. And I never forgot that. I left Germany dominated by the idea— of course somewhat exaggerated: Never again! I shall never again get involved in any kind of intellectual business. I want nothing to do with that lot. Also I didn’t believe then that Jews and German Jewish intellectuals would have acted any differently had their own circumstances been different. That was not my opinion. I thought that it had to do with this profession, with being an intellectual. I am speaking in the past tense. Today I know more about it �…

GAUS: I was just about to ask you if you still believe that.

ARENDT: No longer to the same degree. But I still think that it belongs to the essence of being an intellectual that one fabricates ideas about everything. No one ever blamed someone if he “coordinated” because he had to take care of his wife or child. The worst thing was that some people really believed in Nazism! For a short time, many for a very short time. But that means that they made up ideas about Hitler, in part terrifically interesting things! Completely fantastic and interesting and complicated things! Things far above the ordinary level! I found that grotesque. Today I would say that they were trapped by their own ideas. That is what happened. But then, at that time, I didn’t see it so clearly.

The cover of this book was hard to resist.

Beth has been through the worst betrayal that anyone should ever have to go through. I would probably never trust anyone again if I had to live through what she did. I would really think that there must be something really wrong with me in the sex department.

Marco will only have a relationship for a month before he breaks up with the woman that he is going with. All bets are off and everything changes when Beth comes on the scene. I really liked the way they met.

Both of the characters in this book have some hang ups and need help getting over things that are in their pasts. There is a really strong connection between these two. I would like to know if Beth ever tries to talk to her sister again. I do believe that would help her heal even more.

I didn’t realize until I was getting ready to write my review that there was another book before this one and I will have to go back and read it. This is the first book that I have read by this author. I enjoyed the way her characters interact with each other and the plot was great. I liked how the characters resolved what was going on in their lives to be able to have a future.

I recommend this book to everyone that loves a great erotic read.

A Comprehensive History of Japan

A History of the Japanese People is a comprehensive history of the Japanese Empire from its mythological beginnings up to the date of publication in 1912. Because the copyright has expired, it can be downloaded free, which is very convenient for anyone who wishes to learn more about the earliest Japanese history. Naturally, this book cannot cover more recent events, including World War II and after, but the lack is more than made up for by the authors' exhaustive coverage of Ancient, Medieval, and early modern Japan.
The first chapters do drag a bit as the authors describe the mythological history of prehistoric Japan. The myths and legends are rather disordered and the names of the gods are confusing and repetitive. Once they move on to firmer ground, the story becomes more engrossing.
Despite the excellent quality of this work, two weaknesses made the book less than completely satisfactory. First, the kindle edition does not include the illustrations or the maps. I could do without the illustrations, but at least one map of the Japanese islands would have enabled me to follow the events better, especially the military campaigns. The second weakness is that in a comprehensive history such as this, there are many unfamiliar (to the Western reader) names and terms and it is sometimes difficult to remember them all. A glossary would have been helpful. Despite these weaknesses, I highly recommend this book.
I might add, not as part of the review, in light of later events in Japanese history, it is a bit chilling to read the authors defense of Japanese aggressions in Manchuria and Korea, especially when they suggest that the Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910 was for the benefit of the Korean people. I think few Koreans would agree with that sentiment.

Japanese History

I am a history teacher and this book has been more than adequate in helping me preparing for teaching according to the standards of California. This book is very comprehensive so you should search your Kindle for key words like, Prince Shotoku, Daika Reforms, and Sengoku Jidai. That should make reading the book a lot more easier. The vocabulary can be extravagant at some parts but if your reading it on the Kindle you can easily scroll down to the word and find the definition, but if your reading the actually paper back you better have a dictionary close by and good luck! You cannot beat the price of free for a comprehensive scholarly source of Japanese History. Enjoy!

The Wrong Impression.

The only previous reviewer made this book sound horrible, but sometimes I don't really care. This does have a slight overabundance of words, indeed where a few less would have done the same job. That is not hindering as much as he made it seem. As a high school student, I can say that this is superior to my writing and I am an above average writer for my age group.

I like it.

I understand that it is an author trying to give his mentor/inspiration his fair credit. It is written like a "Dummies" book-using easy language for the layperson. I like the book-it explains the history of hypnosis and why he's telling you about it-which makes the chapter make sense to read. The rest is cool-I feel like I am really getting the same lesson as if I were sitting in a room watching someone do the steps. I guess some ppl are turned off by the mentor tribute, and the way the author explains why some medical professionals want to keep it for themselves. The chiropractic analogy explains it well-and I, for one, am glad I am getting this perspective. I am hoping to one day train in the art and become a master myself!

A must have for serious students!

Learning hypnosis in Chile is not an easy task; you have courses that cover the basics of Hypnosis in a somewhat proper way but they do not cover all the relevant aspects. This book helped me a lot to understand the foundations of the art of hypnosis, and helped me to enhance my performance as Hypnotist.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the basics of hypnosis! The author has a deep respect for his late mentor and you can see this reflected in the quality of the book and in its second volume The Art of Hypnotherapy that covers some more advanced techniques that in my practice have proven very effective!

This book is truly a must have for hypnosis students! So read it, study it and learn the basics that will help you to become a great professional!

Kids Party Food

I love this book. It is filled with staple recipes I enjoyed at birthday parties as a child in Australia. The recipes are quick and easy, and a hit with children and adults alike. Some ingredients are distinctly Australian, but can be substituted or located locally. If you are looking for ideas for an Australian themed kids party, or just fun snacks, then this is the book for you.

Excellent introduction to Theology for the student and serious reader alike

I recently came across this book from a friend and having perused it at length, think that it is the best Intro to Christian theology currently out there. I had McGrath's "Christian Theology: An Introduction" for a textbook as an undergrad years ago, which was excellent. This I think is better, more readable, and more comprehensive. I think this will become a classroom standard and a great guide for those with a serious interest in theology for years to come.
