About the Author
Phil Wicklund is a regional practice manager (responsible for the Sitecore team) at RBA, Inc. He provides managerial, operational, and profit/loss oversight across RBA's portals, business intelligence, enterprise social, collaboration, and managed services teams within RBA's North region. Phil started working in IT in 2003 and has since designed and deployed many dozens of large-scale enterprise solutions, including many for Fortune 50 companies. As a regional practice manager he owns the profit/loss for his practice which has him performing many activities beyond a typical technologist, such as ownership of a great employee experience, ensuring unparalleled customer satisfaction, opportunity tracking/planning in CRM, pre-sales solution alignment with customers, account strategies, go-to market strategies, marketing/promotion strategies, and fiscal budgetary responsibilities.�Phil is currently in his 2nd year of Doctoral studies at the University of St. Thomas. He works to extend his studies in technology and business by deepening his understanding of Organizational Leadership, working toward a dissertation that combines the three disciplines. He hopes to graduate in late 2016 or spring of 2017.

Jason Wilkerson is the Discipline Lead of the Sitecore practice at RBA, Inc., a Sitecore Platinum Partner. Brilliant way to start in Sitecore, or improve

I started a new job and had to learn Sitecore in three weeks. Their training materials were Web Forms based and useless. Working through this book was a great overview and introduction, as well as having many sections on 'best practices', something a system like Sitecore badly needs for new devs trying to work out the best way to organise things. The book even gives a variety of options rather than putting forward one way to go.

Great intro to real world Sitecore development

This book is a wonderful resource for anyone looking to get into Sitecore development. Sitecore training teaches the basics of the product, but this book outlines practical, real-world development practices and tools that are in common usage in the Sitecore community.

It's not a compendium of all aspects of Sitecore development (for example it does not cover serialization or deployment) but it covers daily developer tasks very well.

I am a Sitecore MVP with 8+ years of Sitecore experience.

Useful information, overly verbose. Learn when to stop selling.

The book is overly verbose and is constantly trying to sell you sitecore. Given you've bought this book your management told you already that you've got to work with the product.

While the book says it's not an "introduction" it barely qualifies as content appropriate for a seasoned software engineer. It does not extol best practices, nor the techniques common in industry. Given the foreword is written by Michael West (A sell sword for Sitecore) it is not much more than a giant marketing book where you paid for them to waste your time.

Not all of it is bad as seasoned software engineer who has worked with sitecore you'll find a handful of pointers.

When the book avoids discussing are the challenges of working with the product Sitecore which would be more appropriate given the "Professional" in the title. Upgrading sitecore is a PITA (it takes 4-6 hours to upgrade point versions) It lacks version control for your data templates and there is very little community (even in major cities like New York or Boston) around the product.

Also this book is in Black and White not color like the preview indicated which was kind of disappointing.

Good for 2 groups of readers.

This book is suitable for 2 sets of audiences:
a) Those without prior knowledge of Probability and Statistics, but with a strong maths background;
b) Those who already have a reasonable knowledge in Probability and Statistics (like myself, I hope), who want a more technical cut to their knowledge. After all, probability and statistics should involve heavy use of matehematics at higher level.

Solid introduction to probability and statistics

I used this book in one of my advanced probability courses, and it helped me to improve my understanding of the theory behind probability. It definitely requires a background in probability and as the author says it's not a "cookbook", but a mathematics text.

The authors develop the theory based on Kolmogorov axioms which solidly founds probability upon measure theory. All the concepts, limit theorems and statistical tests are introduced with mathematical rigor. I'm giving this book 4 stars cause sometimes, the text gets extremely dense and technical. Some intuitive explanations would be helpful.

Though, this is the right book for the mathematicians, industrial engineers and computer scientists wishing to have a strong background in probability and statistics. But, beware: not suitable for the novice in undergrad.

I am a graduate student studying statistics and this is our departmental text for statistical theory. The authors of this text remind me of the type of teachers who come into class and write a lot of math on the board with little explanation. What explanation is given is of little help and nearly impossible to navigate. Open up to a random page and you won't know what section or chapter you are in because the publishers failed to include these as headings. Many of the exercises at the end of each section have incredibly difficult solutions requiring theorems included nowhere in the book or a great deal of algebraic manipulation and calculus and very little statistical ability.

I realize that this text was intended to be highly mathematical, but if you are interested in a graduate level text that explains statistical theory 100x better than this text, see Casella and Berger's. The only reason my department uses this text instead is because a professor is buddies with the author.

My classmates and I complain about this text constantly. It is truly a nightmare.

A masterpiece in Physics pedagogy.

After reading Shankar's Fundamentals of Physics last year, I couldn't help but get a feeling of satisfaction upon realizing that, in only a little over 400 pages, I had reviewed the essentials of introductory physics in stunning elegance. I credit that book with giving me an intuitive outlook on physics, something that has come in handy in my upper division physics classes.

There's something oddly satisfying about Shankar's writing style and the clear expository manner in which he explains physics. Shankar has a way in which he can explain the essentials of something complicated, without compromising the depth of the subject. Hence, drawing once again on his prodigious skills as a teacher, his Fundamentals of Physics II covers not just the essentials of Electrodynamics and Magnetism, it goes above and beyond to even explain the role of electromagnetism in relativity.

Among the other topics included in his masterful book, one can also find a few chapters in optics that contain a nice and neat introduction to the principle of least action. The section on quantum mechanics is very well written, and serves as a very neat introduction to the basic principles of quantum mechanics (for those interested, Shankar wrote another excellent book titled "Principles of Quantum Mechanics." A more advanced text, but worth the read). The mathematics throughout the book is not terribly challenging and will come in handy for future courses.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with Shankar's latest entry into the Open Yale course series, as this is a worthy sequel to his previos Fundamentals of Physics textbook. I will be using his new book as a refresher before I take my first serious E & M upper division class at Cal Poly.

For anyone who is looking to enhance their physics intuition and knowledge, one can never go wrong with Shankar.

Mind, music, and emotion.

Ostwald has written a careful and insightful biography. Not only are effects of mental illness in musical creativity explored, but there are a number of interesting philosophical issues raised about mind and it's functioning. The subjective experience of creativity, musical or otherwise, is impossible to communicate fully, but Ostwald does a remarkable job. Ostwald's thoughts on musical expression and meanings therein are original, and not extensions of Suzanne Langer's (or other philosophers') interpretation. That Ostwald himself is a pianist as well as psychiatrist allows an intimate understanding of musical cognition, and this in conjuntion with his psychiatric training makes for an unusual analysis. This is not light reading,but definitely in range of an interested reader. It is thought-provoking and facinating. I highly recommend it.

Music, meaning and madness

Ostwald isn't a normal biographer. He is concerned with more than the 'facts'. His focus is on the complex relationship between Schumann's music, his life, his mental state and his relationship with Clara. But to this end he has done a major service to our understanding of Schumann by going well beyond the published sources. Ostwald has translated hitherto unpublished diaries and correspondence that reveal a Schumann who is considerably more complex than he appears in biographies up to this.
Certainly, Ostwald's interest in the psychiatric elements of Schumann's life results in a certain amount of terminology, but this is not jargon; there is a chapter which reviews Schumann's illnesses using current American diagnostic guildelines, so this is hardly psychobabble!
Ostwald is also a tireless advocate of the less-well-known Schumann, for which he also deserves credit.
And finally, the chapter on Schumann's final illness is haunting and chilling. He died a much more wretched death than we supposed.
Strongly recommended.

Insightful and Realistic

The late Peter Ostwald's biography is still the most insightful, intelligent and accurate account of Schumann's life and his illness. Dr. Ostwald undertook a very careful study of all the factual material available and drew the most realistic, sensible and compelling conclusions about Schumann's life. Schumann, like other composers, was long regarded as schizophrenic while some writers are still recycling the old notion that he suffered from syphilis and that it was the cause of his mental decline. Schumann was, as Ostwald rightly claims, bipolar. The signs of his illness were in place long before he might have contracted syphilis and even that possibility is in doubt. Ostwald brought Schumann scholarship into the 20th century and debunked a lot of misconceptions about the composer, his illness and his relationships. Highly recommended.

Charmed into learning stuff.

I have never been a big manga fan, and I truly suck at math, statistic included. But I've always wanted to know at least a little math, and statistics seems to be among the more interesting areas (perhaps because of how stats can be abused in government, the marketplace, etc.). I have read "The Cartoon Guide to Statistics" and found it fun, useful book. But I think "Manga" is better. For one thing, as white Westerner, I was utterly charmed by the Japanese flair in the book. My favorite example is when the tutor told a recalcitrant Rui, "You dampen my spirits." I would love to think that somewhere in America we have a math tutor who would say such a thing. I doubt we do.

The art and narrative is relentlessly cute (in a way I approve of...after all, who doesn't love the Japanese gape-mouthed pillow cushion of a monster, Domo?). And the statistics instruction is, while kept basic enough, comprehensive enough to have made me feel like I was picking up valuable knowledge. There's probably nothing here that a real statistician would find compelling, but for a young person or an older person who's never properly learned any statistics, this book is the spoonful of plum wine that helps the standard deviations go down.

As to unadulterated usefulness, that might come in the last chapter and appendix, which demonstrates how an Excel spreadsheet can be used to figure out statistical data. Another reviewer commented that the longish-winded explanations the tutor gives to how statistics work, the formulae that are used to work them out, are unnecessary because most of those functions are easily accomplished with computers now. That's a fair point, but I disagree. I still think there is something importantly organically with connecting on an understanding level with what computer functions are up to that helps maintain the meaning of those functions for us better. I might liken it to photography--sure, a digital autofocus camera might effortlessly take better pictures than we could with a manual focus old Nikon SLR. But what we learn composing the hands-on way might make us understand and appreciate the product of technology all the more.

In this perhaps the book is just capturing something I imagine to be a flavor of Japan...a country with profound traditions, and incredible technological prowess. Even manga artwork seems to be a fusion of traditional minimalism with something very vanguard and hip. In other words, not only is "The Manga Guide to Statistics" a good work of pedagogy, but it's a darn fine work of pop art as well.

Great introduction to statistics

This book is fantastic! While some might find the romantic sub-story a bit out of the norm in some cultures, it's completely normal for Japanese manga. The book as a whole is a great explanation of statistics and statistical concepts, using visuals and explaining what statistical terms mean in ways that everyone can understand.

Engineer uses Stat at work

I love this. I've took enough stat class in my life, and I've used some stat stuff at work. This book is great to explain the basic information about stat. There are some terminology that I didn't know as well. I like their approach of using daily stuff to explain stats.Also, towards the end, there are small practice problem for you to do. Is nothing much but at least to start some where. It's easy reading, and I enjoy it. I'll probably will start my collection with other "Manga Guide to..."
