Introduction

The Oracle Forms Interactive Workbook presents Oracle Forms in a unique and highly effective format. It challenges you to learn Oracle Forms by using it rather than by simply reading about it.

Just as a grammar workbook would teach you about nouns and verbs by first showing you examples and then asking you to write sentences, the Oracle Forms workbook teaches you about Forms, triggers, and items by first showing you examples and then asking you to create these objects yourself.

Who This Book Is For

This book is intended for anyone who needs a quick but detailed introduction to building applications with Oracle Forms. The ideal readers are those with some experience with relational databases, specifically Oracle, but little or no experience with Oracle Forms or application development.

You should be comfortable with relational database concepts, as well as SQL and PL/SQL. If you are unfamiliar with any of these subjects, refer to the other books in the Prentice Hall Interactive Oracle Series.

The content of this book is based on the material that is taught in an Introduction to Oracle Forms class at Columbia University's CTA program in New York City. The student body is rather diverse in that there are some students who have years of experience with IT and programming, but no experience with Oracle Forms, and then there are those with absolutely no experience in IT or programming. The content of the book, like the class, is balanced to meet the needs of both extremes.

How This Book Is Organized

The intent of this workbook is to teach you about Oracle Forms by presenting you with a series of challenges followed by detailed solutions to those challenges. The basic structure of each Chapter is as follows:

Each Chapter contains interactive Labs that introduce topics about Oracle Forms. The topics are discussed briefly and then explored through Exercises, which are the heart of each Lab.

Each Exercise consists of a series of steps that you will follow to perform a specific task, along with questions that are designed to help you discover important things about Forms on your own. The answers to these questions are given at the end of the Exercises, along with more in-depth discussion of the concepts explored.

The Exercises are not meant to be closed-book quizzes to test your knowledge. On the contrary, they are intended to act as your guide and walk you through a task. You are encouraged to flip back and forth from the Exercise question section to the Exercise answer section so that if need be, you can read the answers and discussions as you go along.

At the end of each Lab is a series of multiple-choice self-review questions. These are meant to be closed-book quizzes of sorts to test that you have absorbed the Lab material. The answers to these questions appear in Appendix A. There are also additional self-review questions at this book's companion Web site, found at http://www.phptr.com/phptrinteractive/. (The companion Web site will be explained in the next section of this introduction.)

Finally, at the end of each Chapter you will find a "Test Your Thinking" section, which consists of a series of projects designed to solidify all of the skills you have learned in the Chapter. If you have successfully completed all of the Labs in the Chapter, you should be able to tackle these projects with few problems. There are not always "answers" to these projects, but where appropriate, you will find guidance and/or solutions at the companion Web site.

The Chapters should be completed in sequence because the material builds on itself as you go along. Additionally, many of the files you create and save in earlier Chapters will be required in later Chapters. In the end, all of the skills you have acquired and files you have created will come together in Chapter 13, "Forms Menus," where you will create a menu system to manage your completed and working application.

All of the Exercises and questions are based on a sample database called STUDENT. The files required to create and install the STUDENT schema are downloadable from the Web site. Additionally, many of the Exercises require that you work with pre-created Forms files. For example, in Exercise 1.1.1, you will be required to open and answer questions about a file called EX01_01.fmb. This file and all the rest you will need for the workbook are downloadable from the Web site.

The answers to the "Test Your Thinking" sections will also be found at the Web site. These answers will be textual or in the form of downloadable files.

In addition to required files and "Test Your Thinking" answers, the Web site will have many other features like additional review questions, a message board, and periodically updated information about the book.

You should visit the companion Web site and download the required files before starting the Labs and Exercises.

What You'll Need

Oracle Developer 6.0: Oracle Developer 6.0 is Oracle's application development tool suite that contains a number of different components. The Oracle Forms Interactive Workbook is concerned only with Oracle Forms. Oracle Forms Version 6.0.5.0.2 was used to create the Exercises, but subsequent versions should be compatible.

Since Oracle frequently improves and changes its products, new versions are released all the time. However, the concepts covered in this book are fundamental to the Oracle Forms product and are unlikely to change significantly in the near future. So, even if your version of Oracle Forms is different than the one listed here, you should still be able to make use of this book.

Oracle8: Oracle8 is Oracle's RDBMS and its flagship product. You can use either Oracle Personal Edition or Oracle Enterprise Edition. If you use Oracle Enterprise Edition, it can be running on a remote server or locally on your own machine. Oracle 8.0.5 Enterprise Edition running locally was used to create the Exercises for this book, but subsequent versions of Oracle should be compatible.

Additionally, you should have access to and be familiar with SQL*Plus.

Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0: The Oracle Forms development environment is available on a number of different operating system platforms, including Microsoft Windows and various flavors of UNIX. The Exercises, screenshots, and examples in this workbook were created using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3. Therefore, it is geared more toward those working in a Windows environment.

But, as mentioned before, most of the Forms concepts in this book are rather fundamental and, therefore, apply to all operating systems. So, even if you are developing on a UNIX platform, this book can still be of use to you. If you are using UNIX or another non-Windows OS, keep in mind that the screenshots will not match what you see on your screen and that Appendix B, "Windows Registry," does not apply to you.

It is important that you visit this site and download the necessary files before you start working through the Chapters in this book.

Knowledge

To complete the Exercises, you should be familiar with relational databases as well as Oracle database concepts. You should be comfortable using SQL to access and manipulate database objects such as tables, constraints, sequences, and so on. You should also be able to write simple PL/SQL procedures that include, among other things, local variables, conditional logic, and cursors. If you are not familiar or comfortable with these subjects, it is recommended that you refer to the other books in the Oracle series. These are listed earlier in this Introduction.

Finally, you should be reasonably comfortable with accessing and configuring the Windows Registry. This will be necessary so that Oracle Forms can properly locate all of the files you create. Appendix B, "Windows Registry," provides a brief description of the Registry and all of the information you will need to configure it for Oracle Forms.

You should read and complete the tasks in Appendix B before starting the Labs and Exercises.

About the Sample Schema

The STUDENT schema contains tables and other objects meant to keep information about a registration and enrollment system for a fictitious university. There are ten tables in the system that store data about students, courses, instructors, and so on. In addition to storing contact information (address and telephone number) for students and instructors, and descriptive information about courses (cost and prerequisites), the schema also keeps track of the sections for particular courses, and the sections that students have enrolled in.

The SECTION and ENROLLMENT tables are two of the most important in the schema. The SECTION table stores data about the individual sections that have been created for each course. Each of these section records also stores information about where and when the section will meet, and which instructor will teach the section. The SECTION table is related to the COURSE table and INSTRUCTOR table.

The ENROLLMENT table is equally important because it keeps track of which students have enrolled in which sections. Each enrollment record also stores information about the student's grade and enrollment date. The ENROLLMENT table is related to the STUDENT table and SECTION table.

The schema also has a number of other tables that manage grading for each student in each section.

Great book, but the companion files are not more available on internet

The book is just great! Finally some misterious Oracle Forms 6i concepts are clear to me! The book format, an interactive workbook, is great for learn an software develpment platform. But i gave only 4 stars in this review because I could not donwload the companion files to the book. All URLs on the book does not work any more and I could not found the companion files on web. Please: if anyone can help me to find the companion files for the book, it would be extremely apreciated.

Great for introducting students to Oracle Forms

I work in a position where I train professional programmers for our client. Most of our programmers are transferring from Legacy systems to our new Oracle system. We have started using this book as an alternative to more expensive classroom/online training and have found it very useful. The chapters are small enough to do in a sitting and the exercises help reinforce what was learned in the chapter. The current users are programmers who have been doing mainframe programming for 10-20 years and are just now transitioning to Windows programming. I'm amazed at the progress they are making through the use of this book.

All of the data and sample forms are available online at a website listed in the books introduction. It's designed to be run on a personal installation of Oracle DB, but I was able to run the provided data creation scripts in our enterprise installation without issue. I used our developement environment and created the data without any modifications to the scripts and no DBA security rights (other than the right to create new tables). Took about 5 minutes of setup and then all my students were able to work with it under their normal developer rights.

There is only one downside I've found, and that's the binding. For a book that's designed to be read while doing exercises on the computer, it should have a spiral bound rather than normal book binding. The book does not want to stay open, the margins are too close to the binding, and after several times of forcing it open the bindings are wearing very badly after just a few months. Some copies even have pages starting to fall out. It's a minor thing in comparison to the content, but is awfully frustrating for my students.

In summary, we've looked at countless resources and have found this to be one of the best (cost vs. effectiveness) training tools for our programmers.

It is mainly to learn more than to just begin

I would say, this book is strictly not for new forms developers, because some of the reviewers have given bad reviews for this book, it is only because this book goes only with some knowledge of developing application using forms. The main objective is not to teach you how to develop an application using forms but to understand, better way of developing application using forms. So if you are new then I would recommend, read Oracle Certified Professional Application Developer Exam Guide first and then try using this book. This book has got an excellent way of explaining things in the simplest manner as well as same techniques can be applied in your day to day project requirements. Same programs which you are suppose to download and you have to work on those are excellent in nature because there are no errors as well as it works in the same manner, way it is mentioned in the book. Last 3 topics about Multi Form Application, Passing Parameters and Menu Application Role concepts, I am sure you will not find such examples in any books or even in manuals. So I would say, it is worth going through this book provided you are smart enough to work on forms.

Robert Winch is currently a Senior Software Engineer at VMware and is the project lead of the Spring Security framework. In the past he has worked as a Software Architect at Cerner, the largest provider of electronic medical systems in the US. Throughout his career he has developed hands on experience in integrating Spring Security with an array of security standards (i.e. LDAP, SAML, CAS, OAuth, etc). Before he was employed at Cerner, he worked as an independent web contractor in proteomics research at Loyola University, Chicago, and on the Globus Toolkit at Argonne National Laboratory.

Peter Mularien

Peter Mularien is an experienced software architect and engineer, and the author of the book Spring Security 3, Packt Publishing. Peter currently works for a large financial services company and has over 12 years consulting and product experience in Java, Spring, Oracle, and many other enterprise technologies. Falls flat

Any text book about software these days--especially one about an established Open Source project--has large shoes to fill. It has to be a good reference; it has to be a good tutorial; and above all it has to be better than the available documentation. Let's check those things to see whether this book passes muster.

Connecting an application to the Internet is inherently dangerous: data can leak mostly out but possibly in and your internal systems are exposed in a new way. Security of Web Applications is a serious business and Spring Security is the de facto open source solution to many established problems.

Is this book any good? Well let's look at a scenario. You've been asked to implement social networking Single Sign-On (SSO), a very common feature. Nothing in the index about that. Nor are Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter mentioned at all. You've heard of OAuth. Nothing about that in the index either. Not looking good. So you go to StackExchange to see what other people are doing and you see OpenID mentioned and to your delight you find Chapter 8 is devoted to it although there's nothing about the common use-cases you're after. Chapter 9 is about SSO, which looks promising but turns out to rely on something called a CAS server. You don't have one and implementing one looks hard. For a book with literally hundreds of pages devoted to authentication, I'm afraid it misses the boat on a pretty obvious application of it.

Another scenario. You want to learn about web application security. You're in better luck here because the running example is a representative application that captures interesting aspects of this huge topic. It walks you though configuring log in, log out, protecting specific web pages, users and groups, and salting passwords (LinkedIn take note).

The examples used throughout the book are deep in areas where Spring Security needs explanation. That's good, although it means you have to watch out for a couple of things. First, Spring Security 3.1 does not cover everything you have to do to be secure. Not even close. This book refers to some of these critical vulnerabilities (Cross-Site Scripting, SQL or JavaScript injection) but it is inconsistent. Second, it means the flow of subject matter is often drawn out and interrupted, resulting in a tutorial that's too long to be effective.

A popular format for areas such as application security is a cookbook. This approach often meets the needs of reference material and tutorial better than the linear style of this book.

In summary, while this book is accurate and complete, it is only a piece of the security puzzle. You're largely on your own to find out what the rest is and how to implement it.

Good Book for Start with Spring Security

The author introduces a simple application that is audited for security issues to develop the scenario for the use of Spring Security framework. The topics are arranged in a good progression, from Basic Authentication and Authorization to the use of directory services, client certificates and fine grained access control. A background in application security and web development is required. The book can be used as tutorial or reference book, but you may need other material to complement the topics, specifically when it comes to spring MVC, since the samples and the exposition is very linked to this framework. The code samples include are well written, complete, and are well integrated with the text so the reader can follow the changes in configuration and code without problem. On the negative side the graphics of the printed version are terrible, in terms of design and quality. Overall and excellent book on the Subject of Spring Security but you will need more material to fill the gaps to produce strongly secured application.

Good Spring security reference/ cook book

I found this book useful from alot of perspectives. Having become familiar with some relatively heavy weight home grown security systems used in a Struts 2 environment, this book was a great guide to taking full advantage to the built-in facilities of Spring 3.1 MVC framework for implementing security. Explains alot of built-in Spring MVC facilities that I had not found for Struts 2 framework. Was interesting coming from a Spring and Hibernate Struts env to Spring MVC. Got the source code downloaded and was able to run the chapter 1 example after only a few hours of work. The tutorial instructions were clear and reliable. Great instructions for Spring Tool Suite ( eclipse).
In little time I had the chapter 4 examples running in Tomcat utilizing the H2 database. Impressed with the quality of the examples. The tutorial approach and hands-on development steps are a very effective way to teach all the aspects of Spring configuration and java objects required for security in an application.

After becoming more familiar with the code I needed to consult some other resources on Spring MVC, as this is not the comprehensive guide to creating applications in the Spring MVC framework.

Overall find it to be a great guide for Spring MVC and plan to continue working through the examples and using this to build secure Spring MVC based tools.

About the Author
Alan T. Shao is Professor of Marketing and the Director of the International Business Program in The Belk College of Business Administration at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he teaches courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level in marketing research, international marketing, marketing management and marketing strategy. He has also taught on the faculties of the University of South Florida, University of Alabama, Kennesaw State University and Norfolk State University. He received his B.S. and M.B.A. degrees from Old Dominion University and his Ph.D. in marketing from the University of Alabama, with a minor in statistics. He is an active member of the American Marketing Association, Academy of International Business, Academy of Marketing Science, Society for Marketing Advances, and the North Carolina World Trade Association. He is presently on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina World Trade Association and the Charlotte World Trade Association. Dr. Shao is past president of the Academy of International Business-U.S. Southeast Region and has lectured at universities throughout the world. He has published more than 80 articles in many of the leading marketing and international marketing journals, as well as proceedings of major regional, national and international conferences. Dr. Shao is co-owner and Senior Vice President of Information Management of Sovidian Business Services, a web site development company and online education center. GREAT BOOK !

That's one of the best books on marketing research with a simple approach. Subtitle reads "An aid to decision making". But not only to decision making but also to everybody who wants a quick understanding of marketing research. The only thing to say the writer is "thank you" as it has such a simple but powerful approach to marketing research. I am teaching marketing for 10 years and this is one of the simplest book I have ever seen on this mattter. Some special chapters on reliability and validity and internet are unique features of this book. You can be a marketing research instructer or a marketing research student, if you want to know marketing research, just get this book !

About the Author
Michael Bazzell spent 18 years as a government computer crime investigator. During the majority of that time, he was assigned to the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Task Force where he focused on "Hackers" and various computer crime investigations. He has trained thousands of individuals employed by state and federal agencies, as well as the private sector, in the use of his OSINT techniques. He has also taught several college courses including Ethical Hacking, Computer Forensics, and Computer Crime Investigation. His previous books, Open Source Intelligence Techniques and Hiding from the Internet, have been best sellers in both the United States and Europe. They are used by several government agencies as training manuals for intelligence gathering and securing personal information.

I'll read anything Michael Bazzell writes!

I have a complete library of books on privacy, including everything by Ahearn and Luna. When it comes to digital security, however, Michael Bazzell has no equal. Here are just three of my many notes from this book.

P. 20--A new, simple device that can unlock the majority of U.S. hotel room doors. He shows how to identify the bad ones.
P. 179--How to avoid the common dangers of giving your home wireless the wrong name (which some of my friends have mistakenly done).
P. 182--Why it's best to turn off your wireless router at night. (Who knew?)

There are whole chapters about protecting passwords, credit cards, cell phones,cameras, and wireless networks. Chapter 10 is all about how to protect your children.
I've seen no other book as detailed as this one, and I've seen 'em all.

Very good Book

The interesting thing about this book is that it sends to the author's website. When you get there, you are offered a free zip program that unloads everything needed for your computer. Best of all its free.

See What Criminals Are Doing So That You Know How To Protect Yourself!

This book offers up a wide variety of up-to-date information regarding security in our modern world. He lays out, in detail, the tricks of the trade used by thieves, snoops, and scammers so that you can see how to guard yourself most effectively. There is some very interesting detail about programs used to guess passwords, hacks that have made many hotel locks insecure, the way that thieves are using radio jammers to access your vehicle, how scammers and hackers run specific phishing schemes, and much more!

If you want a glimpse into activities of digital criminals in today's world so that you can guard yourself, buy this book!
