Somebody PLEASE write a better manual muscle testing book!

I am an occupational therapy student currently taking Functional Anatomy. This is the assigned book for the course. It is EXTREMELY difficult to follow. It has ridiculously few pictures. There must be a better book out there for manual muscle testing. Our whole class (50 OTs and PTs) have complained about this book.

About the Author

Holly Hazlett-Stevens, Ph.D., is assistant professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. She recently served as research coordinator for a large, multi-site investigation of the identification and treatment of panic disorder in a primary care medical setting (administered by the UCLA Anxiety Disorders Behavioral Research Program). Her main research interests include: generalized anxiety disorder, normal and pathological worry, anxiety and stress-related disorders, psychotherapy outcome research, and fear reduction.

PreSchool-Grade 2-The jungle is a noisy place, and Mama Lion is worried that Baby Leo will not be able to take his nap. She implores Papa Lion to help with this dilemma. He puffs out his chest, stands up tall, and roars, "Quiet!" After the baby falls asleep, he warns the jungle animals, "If any of you makes a noise, and wakes up Leo, I will gobble you up." At first, all of the creatures are silent, but then two parrots caw and squeak, a hyena chuckles and chortles, some monkeys screech and chatter, and a hippo splashes and squelches. However, none of these outbursts is loud enough to disturb the baby, and the disappointed lion finds himself growing very hungry. When Papa's stomach begins to rumble and growl, "Loud as a banging drum," Leo wakes up crying, and the king of the jungle faces his angry wife and sheepishly takes responsibility. The text is simple and descriptive and the use of repetition and rhythmic language make the story perfect for sharing aloud. The colorful cartoon artwork is packed with humorous details. Papa's facial expressions, which range from pompous to grumpy to embarrassed, are a hoot. An energetic, lighthearted tale that will have children roaring with laughter.

This is an exquisite book. I thought this book was so enjoyable. The pictures are so beautiful. My favorite part was when two parrots got into a fight and were arguing. I would recommend book to people who like humor.

Quiet! is a great book

Quiet! has become one of our children's favorite stories. Colorful and inspiring illustrations, accompanied by animated writing (we love the descriptions of the different sounds of the jungle animals) make Quiet! a joy to read. This book makes for a fun, close time with our 2 and 5 year-olds. Quiet! is easy for everyone in the family to enjoy!

This book is great for bedtime and naptime, or anytime you need to quiet little ones. Instead of telling kids to quiet down, the book does it over and over, but in a fun way. Lots of fun to read.

Gaudapada was one of the world’s greatest philosophers in seventh-century India. He invokes the mystical symbol ‘AUM’ (pronounced as ‘ohm’) pointing to the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming and deep sleep) and the nature of reality itself. Your book on the Mandukya Upanishad and Gaudapada kArikA-sis the best introduction I have read on Advaita. Clear, succinct, knowledgeable without being pedantic. The book shows your deep grasp of the principles butwhat is exceptional is your ability to explain the dynamics without dumbing down. And the simplicity of your writing shows that you understand without recourse to abstruse and complicated reasoning. It means you know what you are writing about. A rare feat considering the amount of verbiage out there!

What struck me was your capacity to give the teachings context. TMP Mahadevan, Balasubramanian, TK Sundaram et al have published erudite books but, as Westerners, we fail to catch the nuances that they take for granted. You have given the teaching context, applicability, and awareness of implications and consequences. This is rare. With your Western education and culture you have managed to absorb the teaching within your background. One could go native so to speak and become a swami after intensive study at say Swami Dayananda's Arsha Vidya Ashram but that can be a trap for, by exchanging one set of 'clothes' ( physical, mental, emotional) for another, there is the danger in thinking one is now superior. You have avoided that trap and as a result your investigations have an authenticity lacking in many who 'explain'Advaita however versatile they may be in spouting Sanskrit and abstruse concepts.

A crystal clear explanation of Gaudapada's wisdom ...

Dennis Waite has done it again! His previous works on Advaita have adroitly combined scholarly precision and fidelity to the source texts of Vedanta with a clear writing style that makes these ancient teachings far more accessible to those of us with little understanding of Sanskrit. Now, in his latest work, Mr. Waite has “drilled down,” as it were, from a broad discussion of Advaita to a specific examination of one of the most important texts of the tradition. The result is a book of great value to any serious student of Vedanta, and also to anyone interested in philosophy generally.

A-U-M, Awakening to Reality, is a study of the famous Mandukya Upanishad with the 215 verse commentary (kArikA-s) by Gaudapada. Judging from the extensive bibliography, it would appear that no potential source or translation was overlooked in this effort to penetrate the meaning of this Upanishad and Gaudapada’s commentary thereon. A full translation of the Upanishad is included in an Appendix, along with other useful reference material, including a glossary of Sanskrit terms.

In the main body of the book, Mr. Waite does something different from the usual sequence in which this work is laid out. Instead of a verse-by-verse translation, the author unfolds Gaudapada’s philosophy in logical segments, which form the core chapters on “The World Appearance,” “Causality,” “Creation,” “Nature of Reality,” “Self-Knowledge,” and “Practical Aspects.” This enables him to move back and forth and pull together verses from different sections of the kArikA-s as they apply to the philosophical problem under review. As a consequence, the reader is treated to a crystal clear explanation of Gaudapada’s wisdom by a scholar who has lived intimately with this teaching for decades.

A must read book

I have read the book twice for two reasons, firstly, it is fascinating, and secondly I needed to comprehend new concepts to which I was first time introduced. I do not mind reading it again and again for the book will unfold some hidden materials which have escaped my notice. Advaita teaches that there is only One and perceived duality is on account of ignorance. Advaita is not only a philosophy but a teaching. It is mainly concerned with revealing the Reality behind the Creation. As an aside, it tells about ways and means in the human life to realise the Reality.
The book explains the teaching based on Mandukya Upanishad and Gaudapada Karrika which is a commentary on Mandykya. The Upanishad has only twelve mantras, yet it contains the core of a formidable teaching. The format of the book is reader-friendly. In the main section, it addresses the subject matter topic-wise rather than sequentially and it invariably cites reference to relevant section of the karrika. The Upanishad is transalated and explained in Appendix. The book has discussed such topics as are important and core to understand the teaching of Advaita. Unlike Introductiom in any other writing, the Introduction in the book is stimulating and inspiring and exhorts a reader to embark on the journey to the summit of Advaita.The explanation on A-U-M is simply fascinating. As I read it, I felt transported to a different zone.
Dennis Waite has once again proved that he is not only a qualified teacher but a writer par excellence who knows the pulse of the reader and for whom both the subject matter and the reader are important.

Lucid and exhaustive of most important book in Advaita Vedanata

The Mandukya Upanishad, the shortest (it has just 12 verses) and , according to a general opinion, the most important of the 12 main Upanishads, has the added interest in being associated with the authoritative karikas of Gaudapada, grand-mentor of Shankaracharia, the initiator of Advaita Vedanta. Of the former it has been said that his is ‘a rational analysis of the totality of our experience in all three states: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. Incomplete and insufficient will be any philosophy that is based on the waking state alone’ (Swami Brahmananda).
‘When everything has been said, the fact remains that Vedanta is the only way of thinking that claims to study life in all its aspects in a scientific manner. It treats of truth, wisdom, and happiness, subjects of eternal interest to mankind. The credit of having brought to the notice of thinkers the value of its all-comprehensive method revealed in the Upanishads, and of having successfully built an impregnable system on that solid basis, will ever belong to Gaudapada.’ (Swami Satchidanandendra Saraswati).
This new book, authored by the well-known (and, one could say, prolific writer in the field of Advaita Vedanta - this is his 7th book), has several features that make of it an important addition to the literature in this specialized area, one that is becoming much better known than it was some 10-20 years ago.
Beginning with a few general remarks, something that strikes the reader is the clarity of the writing and the logic of the exposition of its contents which, at first sight, appears to be an introductory text for the un-initiated. Far from it! - and it is not a question of its length (420 pages) or even of the exhaustive coverage of everything that is relevant to the Upanishad itself and Gaudapada’s running commentary in the karikas. Clear and didactic it is, but the tools (armamentarium), organization of the work, and employment of many important Sanskrit words together with their English translation, plus a long Glossary (41 pp.), make of this book an indispensable reference for the modern reader of both this important Upanishad and Gaudapada’s contribution.
An important feature of the book consists in the numerous references (81 in all!) – most of them with short-to-medium length descriptions of the tenets or arguments of the, mostly modern, authors consulted when DW was in the process of preparing this work (Annotated Bibliography – 33 pp.)
Apart from the illuminating Introduction (36 pp.) and ‘What the Mandukya Upanishad is About’ at the beginning, the following 7 sections are: The World Appearance, Causality, Creation, Nature of Reality, Self-Knowledge, Practical Aspects, and Conclusion. They are all important, certainly, but I found ‘Nature of Reality’ to be like a centre-piece.
There are 7 Appendices at the end, comprising altogether 95 pp. To give one an idea of the completeness of the work, one of the Appendices (No. 5) deals with pronunciation and transliteration, using a recently proposed method: ITRANS. Lastly, a full Index, containing also a list of all the karikas mentioned in the book.

GOOD STORY

As an unpublished author, I find Bill McGrath's writing to be unrefined and trite. However, the story lines are creative and engaging. I really enjoy Zara, his detective/lesbian/heroine. She is believable and likable. In "January . . . Jentons" I wish we had gotten to know Betz and Billy Joe better, but the lack did not affect McGrath's ability to spin a good yarn. I expect the next story to be even better.

A handy reference book on future memories

This book is a short (270 pages), concise introduction to some of the promising memory technologies (such as FeRAM, MRAM, single electron memories, post-Si memories, etc.) that have or will soon see the light of day. It's not a treatise on the field but is more like a compendium of interesting memory technologies. Betty Prince who happens to be the CEO of Memory Strategies International has done an excellent job in summarizing the features, cell architectures, operational & fabrication issues, statistical trends and applications of around 50 or so promising memories. In every chapter she has included several illustrations as well as experimental plots collected from a very vast set of references.

Even though the book appears dated due to its publication date and given the pace at which the semiconductor industry advances, the technologies mentioned are surprisingly still under active development today.

One positive of this book is that there are very few equations. This is a book that is highly descriptive rather than being rigorous. You might not come away from this book with a mastery of the field of semiconductor memory technologies and design but you will atleast cultivate a good functional or working knowledge of future memories.

Recommended for students wanting to explore what's in store beyond SRAM, DRAM and Flash.

A good text, but could use some work

This is a relatively good text. It provides a good overview of research methodology, but it does have problems. Specifically, it can be a little hard to follow at times. One of my main complaints is that the author uses really nice graphic organizers, but does not number them. It would be much easier to follow if the graphic organizers and the paragraphs in the text had matching numbers, letters, etc. Also, sometimes the author changes the order of the paragraphs. The graphic organizer will be listed one way, but the paragraphs will be listed another way. Overall, I like the text, but I think it could be even better with some additional editing. On the positive side, I do like the addition of the sidebars in this edition. They help significantly with understanding.

I was forced to buy this high-priced textbook for a class.

Knowing that, here are the book's good qualities:

Quite a bit of research and statistical knowledge is somewhat easily indexed at the beginning of each chapter - often with a graphic organizer. If you need Common Knowledge and Research Statistics for Dummies written out ad nauseum, then this is the book for you.

Areas for improving this book:

Condense the overall text greatly; find an overall focus. Sadly, some colleges make students read an ENTIRE text rather than pick out the important material.
Include at least the real process to perform practical research assignments.
Learn the meaning of a robust statistic and why it's important.

Hard to understand

I found this book to be a hard read. When I purchased this book, I also had to purchase another one for the same class. The other book I purchased presented the same information in an easier to understand vocabulary. The purpose of this book was to introduce educators to doing their own educational research within their peer review audience. It gave the steps you needed to take to examine different issues that you felt were important in your classroom and school that needed to be researched as "problems."

About the Author

Jennifer D. Keene is a Professor of History and chair of the History Department at Chapman University in Orange, California. Dr. Keene has published three books on the American involvement in the First World War: Doughboys, the Great War and the�Remaking of America (2001); The United States and the First World War (2000); and World War I: The American Soldier Experience (2011). She has received numerous fellowships for her research, including a Mellon Fellowship, a National Research Council Postdoctoral Award, and Fulbright Senior Scholar Awards to Australia and France. Her articles have appeared in the Annales de D�mographie Historique, Peace & Change, Intelligence and National Security, and Military Psychology. Dr. Keene served as an associate editor for the Encyclopedia of War and American Society (2005), which won the Society of Military History’s prize for best reference book. She works closely with the Gilder-Lehrman Institute, offering Teaching American History workshops for secondary school teachers throughout the country.

Saul Cornell is the Paul and Diane Guenther Chair in American History at Fordham University in New York. Professor Cornell has also taught at the Ohio State University, the College of William and Mary, Leiden University in the Netherlands, and has been a visiting�scholar at Yale Law School. He is the author of A Well Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control (Langum Prize in Legal History) and The Other Founders: Anti-Federalism and the Dissenting Tradition in America, 1788–1828 (Society of the Cincinnati Book Prize), both of which were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. His articles have appeared in the Journal of American History, the William and Mary Quarterly, American Studies, Law and History Review, and dozens of leading law reviews. His work has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court and several state Supreme Courts. He lectures widely on topics in legal and constitutional history and the use of visual materials to teach American history.

Edward T. O’Donnell is an Associate Professor of History at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He taught previously at Hunter College, City University of New York. He is the author of Ship Ablaze: The Tragedy of the Steamboat General

Slocum (Random House, 2003) and the forthcoming Talisman of a Lost Hope: Henry George and Gilded Age America (Columbia University Press). Concise but complex

This is the first college text books I read more than required of by the professor. Although I was familiar with almost all of the subjects it shed new light on American history that I had not seen before. Events were easy to connect and understand. Everytime I read I found myself thinking "wow, I had no idea".
