Muscle is one of my all-time favourite books - it is very interesting and very funny.

The book tells the story of how Sam Fussell builds himself a muscle suit of armour to protect him from the things that frighten him.

The story begins in New York where Sam is a frightened young man working in publishing who develops an interest in bodybuilding. Interest rapidly turns to obsession as he starts to exercise more and more and pumps himself full of protein. Eventually the obsession becomes all consuming and he packs up and moves to California. In California he hooks up with more serious bodybuilders and the obsession grows. He follows an insane training program, supplemented by large-scale steroid use (abuse) in an attempt to compete as a bodybuilder and a power-lifter. Preparation for competition is even more demanding (It's not about feeling good; it's about looking good) as he attempts to shed all his body fat.

The author writes with a wry yet sympathetic detachment from his obsession. The result is a portrait of obsession that is simultaneously amusing (often outright funny) and chilling (for example taking horse steroids - 'they give these to million dollar horses; they must be OK').

A wonderful book - accessible to all but essential reading for anybody who has ever had even a small obsession with weights.

A classic translation but it still works

I am puzzled by the book's Amazon description as the Soncino Talmud that I study from doesn't have any pictures and currently it's not even talking about the Temple. But I will review the Soncino Talmud in hopes that AMazon got it wrong...
While the Artscroll and Steinsaltz translations have eclipsed Soncino, this is still one of the most valuable translations out there. While Artscroll takes great pains to describe the background of every argument, while Steinsaltz goes even farther in that direction, this edition gives the straight translation with a few notes for clarification. Some of the notes are for scholars while other notes are for anyone (such as defining Havdalah).
In many ways these books are better for a beginning than either Artscroll or Steinsaltz, because although they don't explain every detail, they also don't bog down the casual reader with these details. You can go through several pages and feel like you've accomplished something. You might not get the depth of Artscroll but you've certainly gotten the knowledge. Also, unlike Artscroll, an entire tractate can fit into one volume. The average Artscroll book has between 30-50 pages of the Talmud while these books can fit 90-110 pages. This is not only easier on the bookshelves but also on the pocketbook.
I would recommend this set as the first set and then move on to either Artscroll or Steinsaltz when re-examining and studying the texts. And as with the Talmud always, you need to study it with someone else.

The standard, traditional text with facing translation.

The traditional pagination of the Vilna (first printed) edition of the Talmud (including Rashi and Tosafot) is preserved, but with the addition of a superb literal translation facing each page. This Talmud is excellent for the uninitiated, english only reader, someone with a basic Hebrew-Aramaic vocabulary, or even the more advanced learner who needs little help with the traditional text. It also includes a comprehensive index of terms and personalities. Worthwhile for your Jewish bookshelf.

Its English is the best of all translations

The previous reviews have indicated that this translation is superb. I believe the quality of the English in this translation has never been matched. But as has been pointed out this work does not contain as extensive commentary as Artscroll and Steinsaltz. Perhaps this means as one reader suggested that it is possible to read through several pages more easily than with other translations. But my experience is , and I am not the greatest learner in the world, that Talmud truly does require for most group study, or study with a havruta. 'Reading it' is not really understanding it. This is very complicated and difficult material .

Great book

This book was required reading for a class I am taking. The authors are wonderful writers and they sound like they are even better human beings, and funny ones too. It is an easy read, but full of useful info. My only 'gripe' is that there is no index. That makes it difficult to find a reference you remember reading, but don't remember which chapter.

Everyone entering medical school, nursing school, physician assistants school or any of the other health sciences trading programs should read this before starting. Our educational programs are excellent at teaching medical knowledge, however most fall short on professionalism and interpersonal communication skills. This is an excellent primer!!!

The Key to Improved Patient Care AND Financial Success.

Brilliant! I loved this book so much and got so much value out of it, I just bought the Kindle version after reading and underlining every other line in the hardcover version. As a recent cancer survivor, lifelong "perpetual patient" and customer service expert, I have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to "patient care". This book convincingly builds the case for more compassionate care being essential to better outcomes, compliance etc, and that in the ever more competitive health "care" business, such care or its lack, will likely mean the difference between success or survival for many medical organizations. More importantly, the authors teach you, from their experience doing so, HOW to go about building a "culture" that will result in the kind of loving care patients want and need in order to remain loyal for a lifetime. NO matter what business you are in, healthcare or otherwise, read this book. LOVE your employees and they will reciprocate in kind with your customers. So simple and yet profoundly accurate and actionable. Well done!

Great beginnings

I was really not disappointed by this book, which is the first one published by the author.

The characters were all very touching and made so very human. It is, I think, a great feat to give a plausible personality, dreams and fears to what is known by the general public as only a name, vaguely associated with a period.

The story of William the Conqueror is a lively one, full of treachery and ambition, peace treaties and bloody battlefields, and is told in a very gripping way by the author, with different point of views so as to have the best idea of the situation on every sides. What I really liked was the realism of the novel, the humanity of the characters, the exactitude of the places, habits and every other details making it a very believable version of what really happened. It is clearly a work based on extensive research, and I enjoyed picturing so vividly those names that I learnt at school.

The beginning can seem a little daunting with a lot of names and relationships to remember, but as the story moves on, it all comes naturally.

I really can't wait for the sequel, and I recommend this series for anyone interested in history and great storytelling.

It's obvious that the author was mindful of staying true to her characters and to historical accuracy. This is a book I will be reading again and again, as I will future books of hers. Very well done!

Excellent male characterizations

The author creates a believable, even pitiable character in William. We can only imagine what it was like to be essentially orphaned in the eleventh century. This is the first book I've ever read which contains two -- count 'em -- two, sex scenes written from the point of view of a male virgin. These were well done, not crass at all, although, sigh, I hate to say it, the book's female characters are a bit flat -- even Matilda, who desires to be a "full-fledged" wife to William. At first I thought the author is male, but apparently not. We shall see how the women develop in book two. But don't let this put anyone off. The male characters are excellently drawn and it's not all sword fights -- plenty of sensitive moments between the men as well, but also plenty of bloodshed. Something else I enjoyed - the mention of the Scottish king Duncan, he of Macbeth/Shakespearian fame. Really a good book, and I hope this book gets more positive reviews and publicity. There aren't too many novels out about William the Conqueror, and I am enjoying this one.
It's obviously well researched and again, very enjoyable.

This is one of the SWAT:Top Cop Series. I have really enjoyed this series about SWAT teams. Laura has a great way of dealing with this group. She is a great writer. This book is well written, action packed and full of adventure. I also love how she deals with the faith issue through out this book.
SWAT Officer Jenna Reed returns home after a long day and is attacked in front of her house. She would have been kidnapped if it hadn't been for her lieutenant going by and rescuing her. They find a look-alike hidden in the bushes could this be the real victim? It seems Jenna has a sister she never knew about. The sister had come to her for help as a human trafficking gang is after her.
Lieutenant Griff Vaughn rescues his team member but when the human trafficking thugs come after them he has no choice but to take the girls and go on the run. Griff has always been attracted to his beautiful co-worker. Can he save her and her sister without destroying his already broken heart?
This is a journey of two broken people, three actually. Life had not been good to them, can they learn to trust again? They are forced into a situation where they must trust not only each other but the God who holds all the answers. God has a plan for these two. God has a plan for you to you just need to believe and let Him work in your life.
